The single-point method of dosage prediction: pharmacokinetic basis and method optimization.

Based on the principle of superposition an expression has been established relating a drug concentration at steady-state to a concentration after a single dose. This relationship applies for drugs with linear pharmacokinetics given at equal dosage intervals and it is independent of the route of administration. The relationship provides theoretical justification for the single-point method of dosage prediction reported in the literature. The test conditions in the method can therefore be optimized and the limits of the method defined. The expression can also be used for individualized prediction of maintenance dose after estimation of drug half-life in the patient with no limit to half-life values to which it can be applied.

Education for rehabilitation nursing.

An increasing shortage of rehabilitation nurses is anticipated in the coming decade. This article describes one potential answer to the nursing shortage through a course in rehabilitation nursing for senior baccalaureate students. The unique features of the course included the use of holistic learning experiences that integrate theory and practice. Clinical experiences in critical care units, in intensive rehabilitation settings, and in a variety of outpatient facilities, as well as travels with rehabilitation nurse consultants in the field, provided students with rich perspectives on the scope of rehabilitation nursing practice. Replication of this successful course in other settings has the potential to enhance the recruitment of new graduates into the field of rehabilitation nursing.

Focus on excellence: decision making in rehabilitation nursing.

This article describes the conceptual framework, design, implementation, and evaluation of a series of workshops for rehabilitation nurses in which the Decision Profile, a practical model for clinical decision making, was used. Evaluations confirmed that the approach was exceptionally effective, not only in engaging the audience and presenting information that would assist in continued professional development, but also in validating and supporting the participants' intuitive processes and decision-making patterns through analyses presented by experts.

Adjunctive tumescent technique in massive resections.

Tumescent technique for liposuction is a widely used technique. Four cases are reported here in which this technique was used to aid in the resection of massive neuromatous lesions with good postoperative results and minimal morbidity. Review of the relevant literature is done.
