Automated hierarchic decision structures for multiple category cell classification by TICAS.

TICAS-PROBE, a computerized system has been developed to generate hierarchic decision structures with little human intervention. It has been tested with several tasks, and the results are comparable, if not better, than those produced by human designers. Additional methods of generating the individual elements will be included in the near future.

Pathogenesis associated with replication of hepatitis delta virus.

Hepatitis delta virus (HDV) is a subviral satellite of human hepatitis B virus (HBV). HDV was discovered in patients chronically infected with HBV who had a more severe form of disease. Subsequent studies have attempted to understand the cytopathic effects due to HDV, and this article reviews the progress along with newer studies that suggest that HDV genome replication per se causes no more than a moderate inhibition of cellular growth rate. This inhibition nevertheless provides a selective pressure for reduced levels of HDV genome replication. Such a reduction is apparently achieved by a host cell activity that edits the HDV RNA genome.

Efficacy of a recombinant fowl pox-based Newcastle disease virus vaccine candidate against velogenic and respiratory challenge.

A fowl pox-based recombinant virus TROVAC-NDV (vFP96.5) was developed expressing the fusion and hemagglutinin-neuraminidase glycoproteins from a velogenic strain of Newcastle disease virus (NDV). Studies in specific-pathogen-free birds indicated that inoculation of a single dose of the recombinant led to the induction of significant levels of hemagglutination-inhibiting antibody that were maintained to 8 wk postinoculation. Further, the recombinant induced protective immunity against a combined intramuscular velogenic NDV challenge and respiratory NDV challenge. In commercial broiler chickens that were inoculated in the presence of maternally derived NDV immunity, the level of the NDV-specific humoral response was dampened, but significant levels of protection against both a lethal intramuscular NDV challenge and a fowl poxvirus challenge were obtained.

Immunity to Mexican H5N2 avian influenza viruses induced by a fowl pox-H5 recombinant.

The presence of highly pathogenic H5N2 avian influenza in domestic poultry in Mexico that is not being eradicated by conventional depopulation methods constitutes an imminent problem for poultry producers and agricultural authorities in the United States. The present report considers the candidate vaccines available to H5N2 influenza virus and establishes that a fowl pox-H5 recombinant can provide protection from lethal Mexican H5N2, and prevent shedding in the feces and transmission to contact birds. Inactivated and recombinant vaccines may be useful adjuncts to eradication if the H5N2 influenza virus spreads to the United States or the countries in Central America.
