A variant translocation (11;22) (p15;q11) in a patient with chronic myelocytic leukemia.

Chromosome analyses were carried out on bone marrow specimens of a 55 year-old female patient with CML. As a result, a chromosome aberration, i.e. the translocation between chromosome 22 and 11, considered to be the 3rd case ever reported. However, chromosome 9 of bone marrow cells and chromosome analysis of the peripheral lymphocytes, were normal.

Study on erythrocyte lipids and osmotic fragility in elderly people with anemia.

Hospitalized aged patients suffering from a sequelae of cerebral vascular disorders accompanied by anemia were studied to clarify the relationship among the osmotic fragility of red blood cells, plasma lipids and the phospholipids fraction of erythrocytes. As a result, with a decrease in hemoglobin (Hb) concentrations, each lipid fraction of plasma decreased remarkably and the phospholipid composition ratio of erythrocytes was disturbed. In accordance with the fluctuation of the lipid fraction of erythrocytes, increases in osmotic fragility of erythrocytes and in resistance to osmotic lysis were observed.

A case of acute myeloblastic leukemia with chromosomes showing 46, XY = 11/46, XY, 21q- = 39.

Chromosome studies were performed on a 55-year-old male with the clinical diagnosis of acute myeloblastic leukemia. Cytogenetic studies of the bone marrow cells using the quinacrine fluorescence banding and trypsin-Giemsa banding techniques revealed the karyotype 46, XY = 11/46, XY, 21q- = 39. No. 21 chromosome abnormalities in patients with acute myeloblastic leukemia have been amply demonstrated. However, no case of deletion of long arm of chromosome No. 21 has ever been reported in the literature, and it seems that our case is the first report. In view of the rarity of this case, a brief report seems warranted.

The current concepts of "normal values" and "clinical reference values" in the clinical laboratory (trials for determining clinical reference values of the Tokai University Hospital).

The purposes of this commentary are 1) to summarize the problems and ambiguities that cause many clinical pathologists to discard the term "normal values"; 2) to describe and define two terms, 'normal values" and "clinical reference values", which are becoming important for clinical interpretation of laboratory data; 3) to describe a new method for estimating clinical reference ranges of blood chemistry laboratory tests performed on selected Tokai University Hospital patients; and 4) to provide a bibliography of articles that have focused attention on the conceptual problems in this field.
