Verruciform xanthoma in association with discoid lupus erythematosus.
Verruciform xanthoma (VX) is an uncommon lesion occurring primarily in the oral cavity. Cutaneous lesions are much less common and they preferentially arise on anogenital skin. They are not necessarily associated with a pre-existing inflammatory process. We report a VX in association with a long-standing lesion of discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) on the scalp of a 34-year-old black woman. This association, which to our knowledge has not been previously reported, is consistent with the proposed pathogenetic mechanism of entrapment and subsequent degeneration of epithelial cells in the papillary dermis of VX. Histological distinction of VX from squamous cell carcinoma, with which this lesion may be clinically confused, is straightforward.
Dermatophytosis mimicking Kaposi's sarcoma in human immunodeficiency virus disease.
Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is an important finding in patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), with a distinctive spectrum of clinical presentations. Three cases of dermatophytosis in HIV-infected patients are presented which clinically mimic the appearance of KS. This new observation underscores the importance of histopathologic examination in the evaluation of skin lesions suspicious for the diagnosis of KS. The other clinical mimickers of KS are reviewed.

Measuring cell proliferation.
Histopathology is based on the interpretation of features of the microscopic image. In recent years, there has evolved interest in assessing quantifiable data from these images, with the intent of providing more precise diagnostic and prognostic information. Proliferation characteristics of tumors are among the most important of these data. Methods for measuring cell proliferation are reviewed.

Hansen's disease (leprosy): the North Carolina experience.
Hansen's disease presents a large public health problem throughout much of the world but it occurs infrequently in the United States. Only 8,501 cases have been reported since 1921 and 81 percent of these have been from just six states. Typical of many states, North Carolina has had only twenty-two case reports over this sixty-eight year period. We present two typical cases we have seen in the past year and briefly review some of the epidemiologic, clinical, and treatment aspects of the disease.

Improved histology from inadequately fixed paraffin-embedded biopsy specimens.
The rapid turnaround time demanded of many surgical pathology laboratories often results in the paraffin embedding of biopsy specimens that are less than optimally fixed. Occasionally, the quality of the resulting hematoxylin-and-eosin-stained sections is inadequate to provide a diagnosis. A method is described herein that permits the preparation of histologic sections of excellent quality from suboptimally fixed paraffin-embedded tissue.

Adenosquamous carcinoma of the fallopian tube. A clinicopathologic case report with verification of the diagnosis by immunohistochemical and ultrastructural studies.
A middle-aged woman presented with a pelvic mass. Pathologic examination of the resected specimen revealed a primary adenosquamous carcinoma of the left fallopian tube. Special studies supported the concept of the neoplastic cells differentiating along two major pathways, squamous cell carcinoma and mucin-producing adenocarcinoma.

Infarcted appendiceal carcinoid. CT appearance mimicking appendiceal abscess.
A unique case of an infarcted carcinoid of the appendix is presented in which the computed tomography (CT) and clinical findings mimicked an appendiceal abscess. Though unusual, this possibility and appearance should be familiar to the radiologist particularly if percutaneous drainage is considered.
