The effect of indomethacin on renal blood flow and uretral pressure in unilateral ureteral obstruction in a awake dogs.

In the conscious dog, the effect of administering indomethacin before and throughout an 8-hr period of unilateral ureteral occlusion was determined. Before ureteral occlusion, indomethacin infusion caused a 35 to 40 per cent decrease in bilateral renal blood flow. After ureteral occulsion, the characteristic ipsilateral renal vasodilation did not occur and the ureteral pressure rose only to a maximum of 18 mm Hg and remained significantly lower (P less than 0.05) than pressures in control animals during the entire study period. Hence, pathways for renal synthesis of prostalglandins must be intact for renal vasodilation to occur in response to ureteral occlusion.

Volunteer and clinical studies with carfecillin: a new orally administered ester of carbenicillin.

Blood and urine levels of carbenicillin were measured in 10 healthy volunteers and four patients with renal failure after single and multiple oral dose of carfecillin. Urinary levels after 1000-mg doses in healthy subjects were considered sufficient for treatment of Pseudomonas aeruginosa urinary infections, but the serum levels were too low for chemotherapy of systemic infections with this organism even in severe renal failure. Urinary infections were treated in 35 inpatients with a seven-day course of carfecillin. The infection was eradicated in 21 cases (60%). In 12 cases the pathogen was Ps. aeruginosa, which was eradicated from eight patients (67%). Many patients had severe urinary tract disease. Side effects were virtually absent.

Assessment of fetal lung maturity by estimation of amniotic fluid palmitic acid.

The measurement of palmitic acid in amniotic fluid has been shown to be a rapid means of assessing the lecithin concentration. The level of palmitic acid increases quickly when the fetal lung matures at about 35 weeks' gestation, and the level in amniotic fluid obtained 24 hours or less before delivery clearly distinguishes which infants are likely to develop respiratory distress syndrome and which are mature.
