The association between palatal grooves in upper incisors and periodontal complications.

Palatal groove is a rare morphological defect of upper incisors, frequently associated with localized destruction of periodontal tissue with endodontic complications. In this study, a sample of 1,081 male, young adult subjects, aged 20 to 22, palatal grooving was recorded in 11 (1.01%) subjects, affecting 15 incisors. Among 634 adult subjects, aged 35 to 50, with periodontal disease, palatal groove was found in 5 (0.79%) incisors. Second incisors were more frequently (75%) associated with this anomaly. In the young adults, the mean probing pocket depth in the groove region and around other teeth of the intercanine area was 3.8 mm and 1.2 mm, respectively. In the group of periodontal patients, the mean probing pocket depth was significantly greater at the site of palatal groove (8.8 mm vs. 4.0 mm).

[Glass-ionomer cements].

Glass-ionomer cements represent a new type of dental materials widely clinically applied owing to their good adhesion to dental tissue, caries-protective effects, biocompatibility and simple handling. They are two-component materials commercially available in forms of powder or liquid. The two components are mixed manually or automatically in a vibrator to produce a compact mixture. In addition to chemical, light-polymerizing hybrid glass-ionomer cements are also available. A description is given of physical and chemical features of these materials, their classification and use in particular clinical cases.

Zinc and sodium high pressure lamps for curing composite resins.

Polymerisation characteristics of conventional units for curing composite resins are insufficient considering handling feasibilities particularly in the premolar and molar region. There is also hazardous ocular effect of near ultra-violet part of visible spectra. Sodium high pressure lamp technology has been applied to develop a new high pressure zinc lamp, which is for the first time used for curing composite materials. The results of polymerisation measurements show that future improvements over the usual halogen light sources are possible. Zinc lamp was also compared with the high pressure sodium lamp filled with mercury or cadmium.

Dental status in a group of adult diabetic patients.

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of dental caries, DMFT score and treatment needs in a group of diabetic patients (n = 222), mean age 46.9 yr, and to compare them to those recorded in a control group (n = 189), mean age 43.9 yr, using WHO criteria. Relations between the type and duration of diabetes mellitus, diabetic complications (retinopathy and neuropathy), diabetic control, and the subjects' DMFT status were separately studied. The results obtained revealed no difference in the prevalence of caries between the group of diabetics and the control group. Neither was any difference found in the mean numbers of teeth with fillings, but the number of extracted teeth per subject was significantly higher in the group of diabetics (12.3) than in the control group (9.7) (P less than 0.01). Type I diabetics were found to have a significantly higher number of teeth with fillings (4.05 vs. 2.22) than the non-insulin dependent diabetics (P less than 0.001). Type II diabetics, however, had a significantly higher number of extracted teeth (14.1 vs. 10.4) (P less than 0.001). There was no difference in the caries experience regarding duration of diabetes, diabetic control, or diabetic complications.

[Scanning electron microscopic study of penetrability of sealants in relation to fissure morphology of permanent premolars in humans].

In the work presented here, the morphological types of the fissure system in permanent human premolars are established, their average depth and width as well as the penetration capacity of fissure in relation to the morphological type of the fissure established (V, U, Y1, Y2). The largest average fissure depth was yielded by the Y2-configuration, the lowest by the V-type. The largest average entrance width was shown by the V-type, the lowest by the Y2-type. A total of 71% of the cases showed a complete filling of the fissure pattern by the sealing matter. All types of V- and U-fissures were totally filled up. With the Y1-type there is a total filling up in 60.7-88.1% of the cases, with the Y1 type in 23.6-57.6% of the cases to be expected. The penetration capacity of the sealer is in a certain correlation to the width of the fissure entrance and the fissure depth.

[The incidence of enamel projections on the roots of the permanent teeth].

In this study we examined the incidence of enamel pearls, projections islets and drops on account of 7388 extracted human permanent teeth. According to the macroscopic examination there were 54 (1.6%) enamel pearls situated on the molars of the upper and lower jaw. Pairs of enamel pearls were observed on three teeth, i.e. in 0.09% of the patients. Three enamel pearls were diagnosed on one tooth. Enamel pearls were most frequently found in the cervical third of the mesio- and disto-approximal root surfaces. However, they were not so frequent in the area of the tooth neck, i.e. on the passage to the root furcation. Enamel pearls were 0.3 to 2.8 mm in diameter. Enamel projections, islets and drops were identified on account of stereomicroscopic examinations of the tooth neck and the root furcation. These paraplastic enamel formations were observed in 560 teeth, i.e. in 14.1% of the patients. Enamel pearls and islets were most often situated on the buccal surface of the tooth neck along the inter-radicular groove and enamel drops on the buccal surface of the furcation roof.

[Morphological characteristics of inter-radicular space of the first and second lower permanent molars].

In this study, 537 extracted molars (261 first and 276 second molars) with well developed roots were examined to assess the width of the interradicular space and the shape of the furcation vault. The roots were set widely apart in 91.6% of the first and 64.8% of the second permanent molars, while the roots set closely together were observed in 8.4% and 27.9% of the first and second molars, respectively. Fuseg roots were found in second molars only, in 7.2% of cases. A flat furcation fornix was detected in 18.3% of the first and 14.0% of the second molars, whereas a convex shape was observed in 20.7% of the first and 10.5% of the second molars, respectively (P less than 0.001). A convex shape of furcation was found in 8.0% of the first and 27.3% of the second molars, respectively (P less than 0.001). Interradicular ridge was present in a very high percentage (52.9% of the first and 48.0% of the second molars). A concave shape of furcation fornix was statistically more frequent in molars with closely set roots for the first and second permanent molars (P less than 0.001). It seemed that the width of the interradicular space had no influence on the prevalence of interradicular bridges, regardless of type of molars involved.
