Out of 2,000 calculated and implanted posterior chamber lenses with the convex side posteriorly we selected all patients with intraocular lenses having a power of 9 to 11 or 29 to 30 diopters. We found significant differences in the results of IOL-power calculation, using the SRK-formula or the theoretical mathematic formula. Using the distance between the corneal vertex and the first principal point of the plano convex lens as the anterior chamber depth we find that the theoretical formula is the most accurate in calculating the IOL-power of higher hypermetropic eyes.
The surgical technique of wound opening and closure for planned extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE) and posterior chamber lens implantation is described and the final postoperative corneal astigmatism is analysed and discussed. A prospective study of 720 cases divided into 2 groups was undertaken; Group I using the Terry surgical keratometer and Group II not using the Terry Keratometer. Out of 3 surgeons, only one had statistically significant lower K-readings in the early and late postoperative periods in Group I compared to Group II. The percentage of cases with final corneal astigmatism of 2 diopters or less in the early and late postoperative period is higher in Group I than in Group II. The factors influencing final postoperative corneal astigmatism are discussed.

Computer programs can be used to evaluate tonograms and assess the findings. Using the computer language BASIC such programs can be varied and used in many desk-top calculators and word processors. Pressures recorded at different times during tonography are required as input data.

The intraocular power of various types of lenses was calculated, based on different anterior chamber depths. If the lens type planned is changed, the lens power also must be altered, therefore, it is necessary to know the individual difference in diopters. For this purpose, a special computer program in BASIC is introduced, in which there is a table that shows the refraction after implantation of different types of lenses. Possibilities for altering this program are also shown.

Based on the similarity of genes which code for guanine-nucleotide binding protein- (G-protein-) coupled receptors, cDNA clones encoding new members of the receptor family have been isolated from Bombyx mori and Heliothis virescens. The deduced protein structures exhibit highest similarity to tyramine/octopamine and serotonin receptors of Drosophila. One of the receptor clones (K50Hel) was permanently expressed in the mammalian cell line LLC-PK1. In stimulation experiments its responded to octopamine leading to an inhibition of adenylate cyclase activity in a dose-dependent manner. Pharmacological studies revealed a higher affinity for mianserin than for yohimbine suggesting, that the K50Hel clone encoded a neuronal type 3 octopamine receptor. As revealed by in situ hybridization, this receptor type is expressed in the central nervous system and antennae of moth.
PURPOSE: To report some interesting findings in patients with bilateral Terson syndrome. METHODS: We describe six eyes from three patients with Terson syndrome. Pars plana vitrectomy was performed in one eye twelve weeks, and in four eyes six months after the acute event. In one eye blood was suddenly spontaneously absorbed after four months. RESULTS: The four eyes operated six months after injury showed severe complications and final visual acuity was between light perception and 0.6. The eye with surgical attendance twelve weeks after the acute injury had an uneventful course, and final visual acuity was 0.7. CONCLUSIONS: Because of severe ocular complications and with a view to early rehabilitation, vitrectomy has been recommended for eyes with bilateral Terson syndrome, without spontaneous blood resorption. Surgery should be performed in at least one eye not later than four to eight weeks after the acute injury.
PURPOSE: The aim of the study was to provide new data that add to the understanding of diabetic retinopathy and its treatment by photocoagulation. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Using a spectrometric method, the reflection spectra of the macula in six type II diabetics with proliferative diabetic retinopathy were measured before and after laser photocoagulation and compared with normals. The investigations were done one day before laser photocoagulation and again the day after. Further measurements were made 14 days, 6 weeks and 4 months after coagulation. The reflection spectra were assessed by multisubstance analysis. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: The contents of xanthophyll, melanin and choroidal oxyhemoglobin and the intensity of scattered light were significantly altered after laser coagulation. For example, in patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy the content of oxyhemoglobin in the choroid was lower than normal, but it rose after laser treatment. This suggests an improved oxygen supply of the choroid after laser coagulation, implying reduced retinal hypoxia.
The Worst-Fechner Biconcave Lens for the correction of myopia in phakic eyes is fixated to the anterior iris. Of the 125 eyes implanted between November 1986 and November 1990, 109 eyes ("core group") had a follow-up period of at least 12 months (mean, 25.0; range, 13 to 51). Sixty-eight of these eyes were reexamined at Giessen University Eye Clinic by an independent investigator using a laser flare cell meter; 23 of the eyes also were examined by iris fluorescence angiography. Seventy-five of the 109 eyes (68.8%) were corrected within 1.00 diopters of the desired refraction, and only 10 eyes (9.2%) deviated more than 2.00 D from the calculated correction. The anatomical results were characterized by good fixation, absence of glaucoma, inflammation, and leak from iris vessels. However, the corneal endothelium was damaged in five eyes by surgical trauma, three resulting in corneal edema. In addition, in five eyes the endothelial density decreased during the follow-up period despite an uncomplicated operation, resulting in corneal edema in one eye. These eyes may have had anterior chambers that were too shallow.
