Post-weaning growth and development of Nigerian Dwarf sheep.

Studies aimed at defining the growth pattern and the mature body weight of Nigerian Dwarf sheep were conducted using 18 ewe lambs and 13 ram lambs fed ad lib. on roughages and concentrates from weaning to maturity. Computer generated quadratic growth curves showed that the mature body weight of ewes is about 33 kg attained between 30 and 36 months of age while that the rams is about 42 kg attained between 27 and 30 months of age. Body measurements at maturity were also determined.

Plasma cortisol in Bos taurus and Bos indicus heifers in seasonal tropical climate.

Cortisol concentration in blood plasma was measured in Brown Swiss, Holstein-Friesian, and White Fulani heifers over two consecutive estrous cycles during each of the four quarters of the hot humid seasonal tropical climate of Ibadan, Southern Nigeria. Basal cortisol in plasma was low (between 1 and 10 ng/ml). Differences between breeds were not significant. Averages and increases with proestrus and estrus were higher in the wet season (March to August) than in the dry season (November to January). Packed cells volume was higher in the dry season than in the wet season. Seasonal changes in rhythmicity of the estrous cycle were not significant. The low cortisol in plasma probably reflects adaptation to the hot climate and a mechanism to prevent high metabolic heat.

Histochemical studies of the development of alkaline and acid phosphatase activities in the ovary and oviduct of the fowl (Gallus domesticus).

Alkaline and acid phosphatase activities were studied in the ovary and oviducts of pullets from the age of 2-32 weeks. Adult fowls were similarly studied. Alkaline phosphatase activity was present only in the glandular grooves and crypts of the immature oviducts. Alkaline phosphatase activity appeared at the pits of epithelial evaginations as glandular formation commenced. The young, non-secreting glands also showed the enzyme activity. But in the mature oviduct, alkaline phosphatase activity was confined to only the uterovaginal glands or sperm host glands and the epithelium of the vagina. In the ovary, alkaline phosphatase activity in the theca interna increased as the diameter of the follicles increased. Acid phosphatase activity was not present in the ovary, but in the oviduct, the enzyme activity was present in the uterine (shell gland) glands and in the uterovaginal epithelium and glands (sperm host glands). Alkaline phosphatase activity in the ovarian follicles and in the immature oviduct is thought to be related to histodifferentiation of these structures.

Comparison of four methods of analysis of 99mTc pyrophosphate uptake in rheumatoid arthritic joints.

Knees, hands, forearms and thighs in 22 patients with classical rheumatoid arthritis and 18 controls were imaged with 99mTc pyrophosphate. The uptake of 99Tc pyrophosphate in the joints of the hand and knee was quantitated using a gamma camera interfaced to a computer. Quantitative measurements of joint activity were assessed by analyzing resultant data in a number of ways. Counts per unit area normalized for body weight and dose of radiopharmaceutical was found to be the most satisfactory method of quantitating differences in disease activity. However, the sensitivity of the method was not great enough to clearly distinguish normal and rheumatoid joints.
