[Classic versus laparoscopic appendectomy].

The authors analyze a cohort of 1,831 appendectomy interventions, performed in the years 1996 to 2001 at the Surgery Ward in Prostĕjov. The laparoscopic technique of the intervention was introduced into the ward practice in 1995. The evaluation of patients operated on advanced appendicitis by laparoscopy in 1996 and those operated on in 2001 with a differential approach it became obvious that septic complications were markedly reduced when a differential indication for laparoscopic intervention was applied.

[Results of the diagnosis of nodular goiter in children].

The authors submit diagnostic conclusions in 28 children with nodular goitre aged 7-15 years. Twenty-four children had a mononodular goitre and 4 a multinodular one. Sixteen children were operated and histological examination revealed three times adenoma, twice carcinoma, three times a colloid node, four times a cyst and four times lymphatic thyroiditis. In 10 non-operated children in one a cyst was found and in nine lymphocytic thyroiditis. The authors submit diagnostic conclusions in 28 of different examination methods in the differential diagnosis of nodular goitre in children--red cell sedimentation rate, haemogram, X-ray of the lungs, palpation functional examination of the thyroid gland, sonography, scintigraphy, assessment of autoantibodies, hormonal suppression, aspiration cytology and histological examination.

[Experimental injuries of the spinal cord].

The authors present the results of five years' research concerned with experimental injuries of the spinal cord. The authors studied in cats and rabbits four types of problems: 1. the dynamics of injuries of the spinal cord from the morphological and biochemical aspect, in particular the development and shape of the lesion after complete severing of the spinal cord at the L2 level which was performed by 10-second extradural compression of the spinal cord with an artery forceps. 2. The possibility of resection of the destroyed spinal tissue one week after the insult and the development of autodestructive processes after this resection. 3. Resection of the entire vertebra L2 in healthy animals and shortening of the spine by means of an original stabilization apparatus. 4. Resection of the vertebra, resection of the autodestroyed parts of the spinal cord and approximation of the stumps of the spinal cord by shortening the spine. The assembled findings are discussed in conjunction with contemporary research into the reconstruction of spinal functions and possible transplantations of the CNS.
