Increasing doses of estradiol-17 beta added to in vitro incubations inhibited pregnenolone-induced germinal vesicle breakdown in Rana pipiens ovarian follicles. The inhibition was reversed with increasing concentrations or pregnenolone added to the medium. Because no evidence of estradiol-17 beta inhibition or interaction with progesterone-induced GVBD was observed, the effect of estradiol-17 beta on the conversion of 3H-pregnenolone to 3H-progesterone was investigated. Estradiol-17 beta in doses as low as 10(-7) M significantly inhibited the conversion of 3H-pregnenolone to 3H-progesterone in follicles incubated in vitro. It is suggested that estradiol-17 beta is a feedback inhibitor of 3 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase-isomerase, the enzyme complex that converts pregnenolone to progesterone, a necessary step in the initiation of GVBD.
External irradiation of the head and neck has been shown to increase the incidence of thyroid carcinoma. Fourteen cases have also been reported of thyroid cancer developing in individuals treated with radioiodine for hyperthyroidism. Another patient's case is reported here to emphasize the possible role of I131 on the genesis of thyroid malignancy and the importance of surgery in the treatment of hyperthyroidism.

Monkeys which were transfused with human serum containing a specific antibody developed a clear, middle ear effusion when the appropriate antigen (ragweed) was insufflated into their middle ear space via the Eustachian tube. The typical histological changes expected to occur in an immediate type 1 immune response were present. Intracellular edema, capillary dilation, and an initial exudative reaction were all seen. Serum IgE levels were found to be significantly raised in the animal following passive sensitization. IgE was also present in the effusion, and IgE specific fluorescent mast and plasma cells were noted in the middle ear mucosa of the sensitized animals.

A small survey of employers in an industrialized community in Metropolitan Toronto was conducted to explore the feasibility of establishing a community health centre-based occupational health service for small workplaces. Current use of occupational health services by small workplaces was observed to be restricted, even in plants where hazardous conditions were reported, indicating the presence of unmet needs. The community health centre model was viewed favourably by a high proportion of employers, especially those with identified prevention-related program interests.
