Noble PRST-1 Ca prostate adenocarcinoma study on noble rats: preliminary study on new androgen sensitive tumor.
The Nb rat prostatic adenocarcinoma model has served as an animal model for testing various chemotherapeutic agents. Herein this preliminary report, the tumor Nb PRST-1 Ca was evaluated in 25 animals with testosterone, dihydrotestosterone, orchiectomized and control treatments. Tumor growth curves were determined and show a significant difference on day 13 (T-test) between the control group and treatment groups. Metastases were found in the lungs of all animals and a remarkable rounding of the liver was noted in the androgen treatment groups.

Quantification of lumbar function. Part 5: Reliability of range-of-motion measures in the sagittal plane and an in vivo torso rotation measurement technique.
Intra- and intertester reliability of a previously described technique for measurement of sagittal plane lumbar spine motion was assessed. Results demonstrated a high degree of reliability of this technique. Sagittal plane norms for men and women are also presented. In addition, a pilot study of a simple in vivo measurement method for lumbar torsion is described and tested on a group of control subjects and a group of chronic low-back pain patients.
Chemotherapy and vitamin E in treatment of Nb rat prostate tumors.
Combination of Vitamin E in a single megadose of 20 units per 200 gram rat and chemotherapy was performed. The results revealed that Vitamin E treatment does indeed reduce Adriamycin toxicity and adds to tumor reduction and decrease metastasis. Vitamin E also enhances the efficacy of Cyclophosphamide, Adriamycin and Methotrexate.

Survey of vitamin content of fortified milk.
This paper summarizes work done by 4 different laboratories on the vitamin content of milk. Riboflavin, vitamin A, and vitamin D were assayed in whole, 2%, and skim milks that had been fortified. In general, the adherence to label claim decreased with decreasing fat content. This may be due to methods and stage of vitamin addition prior to processing.
The metabolic activation of 2-naphthylamine to mutagens in the Ames test.
The mutagenicity of 2-naphthylamine and its major metabolites in the Ames test was determined in the absence and presence of activation systems derived from rats and hamsters. In the absence of an activation system only N-hydroxy-2-naphthylamine and 2-nitrosonaphthalene were mutagenic. In the presence of activation systems derived from control and 3-methylcholanthrene-treated hamsters and Arochlor 1254-treated rats only 2-naphthylamine exhibited a mutagenic response while its hydroxy-derivatives and 2-acetamidonaphthalene were devoid of mutagenicity. Pretreatment of rats with 3-methylcholanthrene or Arochlor 1254 enhanced the mutagenicity of 2-naphthylamine while treatments with phenobarbitone, safrole and clofibrate had no significant effect. In the hamster treatment with only 3-methylcholanthrene increased the mutagenicity of 2-naphthylamine. It is concluded that the metabolic activation of 2-naphthylamine proceeds via N-hydroxylation which is preferentially catalysed by the 3-methylcholanthrene inducible forms of cytochrome P-450, whereas ring-hydroxylation appears to be a deactivation pathway.

Electron microscopy of cells showing viral cytopathic effects in Papanicolaou smears.
A technique is described whereby cells showing cytologic changes suggestive of virus infection by light microscopy can be processed further for examination in the electron microscope so that virus particles present in the cell can be visualized directly. We present the results of electron microscopy of over 100 Papanicolaou-stained smears processed this way. The morphologic changes in the cells and the ultrastructural appearances of the virus particles are demonstrated. This technique is particularly valuable for retrospective studies of mounted cytologic or histologic material. It has also proven to be a valuable research tool in the study of human polyomavirus and human wart virus infection.
