Effect of dietary raw soybean and soybean trypsin inhibitor on trypsin and chymotrypsin activities in the pancreas and in small intestinal juice of growing swine.

Sixty-eight growing gilts with a 12 kg average initial weight were used in seven trials to study the effect of dietary raw soybean (Harosov) and SBTI (Kunitz soybean trypsin inhibitor) on pancreatic and small intestinal trypsin and chymotrypsin activities. A solvent-extracted, heated soybean meal (SBM) was used, cause reduced growth. Both a single-meal and continuous feeding of the raw soybean diet caused a decrease in the pancreatic trypsin and chymotrypsin activities. In contrast, to the rat and the chick, the pancreas of the pigs did not enlarge subsequent to consumption of the raw soybean or SBTI diets. Raw soybean feeding also resulted in an inhibition of the intestinal trypsin and chymotrypsin activities. This inhibiting effect was greater than that of the SBTI, especially the chymotrypsin-inhibiting effect. This suggested that soybean constituents other than the SBTI, such as the Bowman-Birk inhibitor, caused inhibition. In the pig the inhibition of the intestinal proteolysis may be a major cause of reduced growth when raw soybean is fed.

Enhanced binding affinity of chicken insulin in rat liver membranes and human lymphocytes: relationship tothe kinetic properties of the hormone- receptor interaction.

The binding of chicken and porcine insulins to rat liver plasma membranes was compared in steady-state and rate experiments. At steady-state, the two insulins reacted with the same complement of receptor sites, but the binding affinity of chicken insulin was about twice as high as that of porcine insulin. The chicken [125I]iodo-insulin-receptor complex dissociated at a slower rate (t 1/2 approximately equal to 26 min at 30 C) than the porcine [125I]iodo-insulin-receptor complex (t1/2 approximately equal to 12 min at 30 C). Similar results, i.e., a slower dissociation rate for chicken [125I]iodo-insulin than for porcine [125I]iodo-insulin were observed also in human cultured lymphocytes, whether dissociation of [125I]iodo-insulin was studied by dilution only or by dilution plus addition of unlabeled (both homologous and heterologous) insulin.. In rat liver plasma membranes, the initial rates of binding of both insulins at 20 C or 30 C were similarly dependent on the hormone concentration, regardless of the degree of receptor site-occupancy, and did not appear to differ very greatly. The data suggest that the higher binding affinity and biological potency of chicken insulin, as compared to porcine insulin, can be accounted for mainly by a slower dissociation rate of the chicken insulin-receptor complex.

[Bone maturation in the fetus and newborn infant].

On the basis of a study of X-ray films of the lower limbs of 994 babies (included 245 hypotrophics) a "bone age" scale of the fetus between 28 and 42 weeks of gestation has been established. The Acheson's method has been used and the bone age determined by addition of notes given to different evolutive phases of the first five ossification centers of the ankle and the knee. To more practical purpose, the results of boys and girls have been joined, although the bone age is in advance among the girls and a theorical scale established with the 10th, 50th and 90th percentiles curves. The comparison with the curves established among 245 hypotrophic newborns, seems to prove that the bone age is a more resistant criteria to malnutrition than the weight and even the length. This new criteria to determine the fetal age does not escape to the criticisms given to the other existing criteria, but radiograph is an objective and fixed document. Its repetition allows to follow the growth of the child and probably to study the role of various factors, mainly nutritional, on this growth. The measure of the length of the tibia and of its increament on the same X-ray films is an other possible method of great interest for the same purpose.

Intestinal emphysema (Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis) in a gnotobiotic pig.

A gnotobiotic pig monocontaminated with an enteropathogenic Escherichia coli was subsequently hyperimmunized to produce a monotypic antiserum. At necropsy, multiple, air filled cysts were found in the wall of the large intestine. The etiology of this condition is still conjectural. However, select strains of E. coli may cause or contribute to intestinal emphysema in swine.

[Carcinoma of the left colic angle presenting as an intrasplenic gas collection (author's transl)].

A 65-year-old man was hospitalised for a subocclusive state, fever, 15 kg weight loss and left abdominal pain. The plain abdominal film revealed gas in the left hypochondrium. Barium enema showed a stenosis of the left colic angle. On evacuation, a little barium entered the gas-filled cavity. Left colectomy with splenectomy was carried out. The pathologist found histological evidence of a small carcinoma of the colon invading the hilum of the spleen. An intrasplenic cavity had been formed at the site of contact. Thus an intrasplenic gas collection was the presenting sign of a carcinoma of the colon. Two colosplenic fistulae of similar origin have been reported in the literature; neither associated with similar radiological findings.

[The anosognostic psychosyndrome. Studies and reflections on a case of acoustic agnosia].

We analyse structure and dynamics of anosognostic behavior by means of a case with auditory agnosia for both linguistic and non-linguistic material. First we investigate on the observational level the structural interweaving of conditions. Second we make an attempt of a structural dynamic analysis with inclusion of both neurophysiological and psychodynamic aspects within a frame which is orientated towards system theories. By doing this, the anosognostic syndrome which is describable in a phenomenalistic sense as a disturbance of body-scheme, neuropsychologically as a neglect-or extinction-syndrome and psychodynamically as regressive Ego dissolution, appears as disintegration of the transactional coherence between specific and non-specific functional systems. At the time also the relations to the structure of focal brain syndromes and organic psychoses are dealt with.

Contraceptive knowledge and practice among undergraduates at a Canadian university.

A total of 509 undergraduate students aged 17 to 23 years, were tested to assess the adequacy of their knowledge of methods of birth control. A level of adequate knowledge was arbitrarily defined a priori as one standard deviation below the mean score of a random sample of second-year medical students, who were assumed to have more than adequate knowledge on the basis of prior courses in reproductive physiology and human sexuality. Of the undergraduate population sampled, 34 per cent were found to have inadequate knowledge. This population is in need of birth control information. Of nonvirgins in the sample, 20.2 per cent risk unwanted pregnancy, the majority (78.3 per cent) in spite of adequate knowledge. This suggests that lack of motivation, rather than purely lack of information, is an important factor contributing to the unwanted pregnancy rate of the college student population.
