Effects of experimental infection of the deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus) with mouse hepatitis virus.

Three deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) given 10(4) TCID50 of mouse hepatitis virus -S intranasally all had significant serum neutralization titers to mouse hepatitis virus -S 3 weeks later. Ten other deer mice were given 10(3) TCID50 of mouse hepatitis virus -3 intranasally and placed with sentinel laboratory mice (CF1, C3H/Rv, and nu/nu) and uninoculated deer mice. One inoculated deer mouse died, but mouse hepatitis virus was not isolated. No other inoculated or uninoculated animals exhibited signs of disease. No sentinel animals exhibited serum neutralization titers for mouse hepatitis virus -3. Three of the remaining nine inoculated deer mice had positive antibody titers. It was concluded that deer mice do not develop clinical manifestations of mouse hepatitis virus or transmit the virus to potentially susceptible laboratory mice.

Prostate adenocarcinoma in rats: induction by 3,2'-dimethyl-4-aminobiphenyl.

Five experiments designed for various purposes [mainly for the study of colon carcinogenesis in inbred F344 male rats given sc injections of 3,2'-dimethyl-4-aminobiphenyl (DMAB)] were reviewed as to the production and presence of neoplastic lesions of the prostate gland. The overall incidence of prostate proliferative lesions among 293 animals exposed to DMAB was 32% (95 animals). Early in situ carcinomas were present in 66 animals, larger intra-acinar carcinomas in situ in 28, and invasive carcinoma in 1. None of the control animals in these studies exhibited prostate neoplasms. The conclusion, therefore, is that DMAB can induce adenocarcinomas in the rat prostate gland.

Nephrocalcinosis in 2 young rats: a case report.

Nephrocalcinosis was diagnosed as an incidental histopathological finding in 2 Sprague-Dawley rats of 150 g bodyweight. The calcified material was located along the entire corticomedullary junction. Dietary and other causes of nephrocalcinosis are discussed.

Effect of dietary fat on X-ray-induced mammary cancer in Sprague-Dawley rats.

We studied the effect of dietary fat levels on the induction of mammary cancer by 350 rads total-body X-radiation given to noninbred albino Sprague-Dawley rats at 50 days of age. Compared to rats on a low-fat (LF) diet (5% lard), rats on a high-fat (HF) diet (20% lard) from 30 days of age had more tumors, with a higher multiplicity of carcinomas per rat. LF-fed groups exhibited a longer median tumor latency period thatn did HF-fed groups. A similar trend toward more tumors with an earlier time of death was seen in rats given single iv doses of 50 mg 1-methyl-1-nitrosourea/kg and fed an HF diet as compared to an LF diet.

The hair cycle of the Syrian golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus).

Growth of hair in 27 Syrian golden hamsters was first observed at 9 days of age and continued to 51 days of age when it ceased. Cessation of growth continued until the hamsters were 71-75 days of age, at which time growth resumed. Hair regrowth always began in pigmented skin areas before it did in the unpigmented areas. Hair growth in the flank organ did not cease at 51 days of age but continued to grow.

Endoscopic visualization of induced colonic tumors in rats.

The visualization of induced colonic tumors in rats was investigated using either a rigid or flexible endoscope. There was 89% agreement between presence or absence of at least one tumor as visualized at endoscopy and necropsy. The agreement was 83% (p < 0.01) when the exact number of tumors was compared. Neither carcinogens (1,2-dimethylhydrazine or N-methylnitrosourea) nor dietary supplements affected the results.

A case of fibrous hamartoma of infancy.

An instance of fibrous hamartoma of infancy (FHI) in the perianal region of an 8-mo-old infant, a hitherto unreported location, is described. The majority of the reported cases occur in the torso and upper extremities. The differential diagnostic features which aid differentiating FHI from other conditions is discussed. Although the tumor may recur after excision, a conservative surgical management appears adequate since all reported cases ultimately have proven to have an excellent prognosis.

A natural outbreak of transmissible murine colonic hyperplasia in A/J mice.

Transmissible murine colonic hyperplasia was diagnosed in 6-month-old A/J mice kept under standard laboratory conditions. Bacterial cultures revealed the presence of Citrobacter freundii (4280). Clinical signs included rough coats, feces adhering to the anus, slight dehydration and rectal prolapses. A nonclotting sanquinous intestinal fluid and gross colonic thickening were frequently seen at necropsy. Morbidity was approximately 50%; mortality approximately 25%. Tetracycline appeared to be effective in controlling the disease.

Are there schizophrenics for whom drugs may be unnecessary or contraindicated?

This study reports that there are schizophrenics who do relatively well long term without the routine or continuous use of antipsychotic medication. Specially selected young males undergoing an acute schizophrenic episode were followed, after hospitalization, for up to three years. While hospitalized they were assigned randomly to either placebo or chlorpromazine treatment. Many unmedicated-while-in-hospital patients showed greater long-term improvement, less pathology at follow-up, fewer rehospitalizations and better overall function in the community than patients who were given chlorpromazine while in the hospital. Factors related to post-hospital outcome were good premorbid history and short-lived paranoid characteristics. Considerations which may have an effect on the successful management of acute schizophrenic patients not on medication are mentioned. The findings underline the need for further study of how to utilize antipsychotic medication more selectively in the treatment of schizophrenia.
