Surgical modification of the AC/A ratio and the binocular alignment ("Phoria") at distance; its influence on accommodative esotropia: a study of 21 cases.

PURPOSE: To study these changes in patients and their relation to manifestation of accommodative esotropia and response to surgery. METHODS: Patient-subjects: 21 patients who had difficulty adjusting to spectacle correction and underwent bilateral medial rectus loop suspension-recession surgery to alleviate their accommodative esotropia. Measurements of AC/A, uncorrected distance phoria, and related parameters were taken before and after surgical intervention was performed and were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA). RESULTS: Both AC/A ratios and the distance phorias are "statistically significantly" (p< or =0.05), and independently, reduced by this surgical procedure. The manifestation of accommodative esotropia and response to surgery can be fairly accurately predicted from the values of AC/A ratio and distance phoria. CONCLUSION: Surgical treatment of accommodative esotropia creates well defined, long-lasting reductions in the AC/A ratio and the distance phoria.

Incremental network analogue model of the coronary artery.

From Newton's equation and the continuity equation, an equivalent analogue circuit model can be derived for each small segment of the coronary arteries. Sapoznikov divided the coronary artery tree into 116 segments. By replacing each segment with its analogue circuit model, a final incremental network model was derived. The model was tested using typical physical parameters under normal conditions, as well as in the presence of coronary artery stenosis. In the case of stenosis, the arteriolar flow with and without autoregulation were compared. The model shows good agreement with the reported effects of stenoses and heart rate on coronary blood flow.

Dynamic contributions of the components of binocular vergence.

Experimental results from step stimulation of the two major dynamic components in ocular vergence showed that while fusional covergence dominated a coordinated binocular vergence movement, accomodative convergence always contributes to the dynamic response. A quantitative analysis of component dynamics, both in isolation and during coordinated movements, indicates that these components are additive at least through a portion of the movement. Two alternative hypotheses are presented for the role of accommodative convergence during the period immediately following a binocular vergence movement.

Computer-controlled access device for medical image processing.

Mass screening applications that involve image processing often require automated devices for accessing medical images such as radiograms. A computer-controlled device that easily interfaces with standard minicomputers of microcomputers is described; the device is mechanically robust and can operate with a minimum of servicing. The design is inexpensive and can be constructed with a minimum of special materials and skills.
