The chemical polarities of the two strands of polyoma virus DNA with respect to the DNA physical map have been determined by hybridization of restriction endonuclease fragments specifically labeled with [125I]dCMP at their 3' termini to asymmetric polyoma complementary RNA (the product of in vitro transcription of viral DNA by Escherichia coli RNA polymerase). The orientations of the polyoma-specific stable RNA transcripts present in the cytoplasm of productively linfected mouse cells have been deduced from this result: the 5' ends of the early and late viral transcripts map very near the origin of viral DNA replication.

The spreading of a cervical infection to the mediastinum is a complication rarely observed, and its prognosis is still very severe. The infectious spreading follows known anatomical tracts, leading to the invasion of definite mediastinal spaces. The cervicothoracic scanning is the ideal procedure leading to the diagnosis, the localization of the infectious sites, and to the demonstration of an abscess and the presence of air in the mediastinum. We report a case of a patient in whom the early use of specific imaging and of proper aggressive surgical intervention did not allow the elimination of a fatal outcome.
A computer-based system for recording and analysing light microscope images, combined with classical cytogenetic analysis, has revealed the spatial organization of the giant chromosomes of Drosophila salivary gland cells. Each polytene chromosome arm folds up in a characteristic way, contacts the nuclear surface at specific sites and is topologically isolated from all other arms.
The authors report a case of cystic disease of the seminal vesicle associated with renal agenesis. This young patient presented only with cystitis. Developmental malformation of the mesonephric duct is the cause of this uncommon abnormality. The value of modern imaging (IVU, US, CT, MRI) is related.
