[Clinical, radiological and pathological study of Ewing's sarcoma of the lumbar spine. Round cell sarcomas. Report on three cases (author's transl)].

Two cases of primary bone condensation type Ewing's sarcoma of a lumbar vertebra are described in children aged 8 and 10 years, as well as one case of the osteolytic form in a 14-year-old child. Ewing's sarcoma very rarely occurs in the spine, and the type with bone condensation is almost exclusively of a primary nature. The tumour extends simultaneously into the epidural space and the perispinal planes. Intravenous urography and myelography with metrizamide are therefore essential for evaluating the degree of tumour extension. Computed tomography examinations are also now necessary. Prognosis is bad and current therapeutic possibilities limited. Histological diagnosis is the only means of distinguishing Ewing's sarcoma from other round cell sarcomas in or around the spine.

[Multiple chondroma affecting the spine: spondylo-enchondroplasia and other forms (author's transl)].

When reviewing the published literature on constitutional bone diseases, for inclusion in a data-processing system, the authors discovered six cases of enchondroplasia affecting the spine. Similar observations have been reported under the name of spondylo-enchondroplasia. Radiological signs and genetic information suggest that this group of affections is a heterogenous one. Vertebral lesions vary greatly in extent, reaching in some case the level of a spheno-occipital synchondrosis.

[Esophageal atresia, brachio-cephalic arterial trunk and tracheomalacia (author's transl)].

The case of 6 children operated for type III esophageal atresia with re-establishment of continuity is reported owing to the association with anterior tracheal compression by the brachio-cephalic arterial trunk. In the 5 cases, control radiography after the intervention showed a tracheotomy opposite the superior esophageal pouch and sometimes a notch in the anterior trachea. In all of the cases, endoscopy confirmed the presence of compression of the anterior aspect of the trachea by the brachio-cephalic arterial trunk. In 2 cases, esophageal transit was normal, the signs of tracheal compression disappeared after section-reimplantation of the brachio-cephalic trunk. In the other cases esophageal complications existed: stenosis, choking during swallowing, reflux. The surgical treatment of these complications led to the disappearance of the respiratory disorders.

[Appendicular abcess presenting as an abdominal mass in early childhood. Radiological diagnosis (author's transl)].

Two boys (two years and a half old) were admitted in this hospital for an abdominal tumor. In both cases a pelvic abcess was present, secondary to a pelvic appendicitis. Symptoms have been deeply modified by previous antibiotherapy. Radiological examinations including opacification of the urinary tract by a intravenous pyelogram and opacification of the recto-sigmoid by a baryum enema allowed in both cases to localize the mass and to lead to the diagnosis with the clinical data.
