Synthesis of beta-galactosidase by Streptomyces violaceus was induced by D-galactose and L-arabinose, and to a lesser extent by lactose, D-arabinose, and methyl-beta-D-galactopyranoside. The synthesis of the enzyme was linear and started to increase 2--3 h after induction by galactose, reaching a maximum after 5--7 h. The highest level of specific activity was observed in 2% galactose, with an increase of 45 times over the basal level in glycerol. Isopropyl-beta-D-thiogalactopyranoside (IPTG) and methyl-beta-D-thiogalactopyranoside (TMG) inhibited induction by D-galactose, but did not influence enzymatic activity. Cellular extracts hydrolyzed O-nitrophenyl-beta-D-galactopyranoside, but did not significantly hydrolyze lactose, melibiose, p-nitrophenyl-alpha-D-galactopyranoside, p-nitrophenyl-beta-D-fucoside, or p-nitrophenyl-beta-D-glucopyranoside. Rifampicin and chloramphenicol inhibited beta-galactosidase synthesis in non-preinduced and in preinduced cells. The inhibition by chloramphenicol was reversible.
The study of 86 cases collected along 5 years regarding the primary bronchus cancer from which the African Negro in Abidjan suffers, points out the recent increase of this pathology, the predominating epidermolid histological type, the fact that men reaching a critical age of 45 years old are mostly concerned and especially those living in the rural areas. Because of the absence of industrial pollution and occupational exposure in Ivory Coast, the very important relation between bronchus carcinoma and smoking cigarettes is suggested.
Fibrous membranes in the posterior cornea occur in failed transplants. The purpose of these studies was to investigate the role of corneal endothelium in the formation of these membranes. The corneal cellular components of rabbit corneas were labeled with tritiated thymidine. Labeled rabbit corneal stroma was replaced with unlabeled tissue (pre-Descemet's lamellar graft), leaving only labeled endothelium. Weeks later small unlabeled penetrating grafts, without endothelium, were placed inside this lamellar graft. The surrounding labeled host endothelial cells were found in a fine retrograft membrane and in the scar of grafts. The experiment demonstrated that host endothelial cells participate in the formation of retrograft membranes, but it does not exclude other origin of fibroblasts.

Previous reports have indicated that some depressed patients excrete less than normal quantities of 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenyl glycol (MHPG). The authors present data indicating that a subgroup of depressed patients who excrete less than normal quantities of MHPG may be identified by the application of explicit clinical criteria. They found no significant difference in the excretion of normetanephrine (NM), metanephrine (M), and 3-methoxy-4-hydroxymandelic acid (VMA) among any of the diagnostic subgroups or between each patient group and a healthy comparison group. However, depressed patients diagnosed as having primary affective disorder and bipolar illness excreted significantly less MHPG than did the healthy comparison group.
In four cases of human acrocentric ring chromosomes r(21)(p13q22); r(21)(p11q22); r(13)(p11q?); and R(21)(P11Q22), association of the annular with normal D and G chromosomes was found. This finding indicates that: 1) the "satellite" association is not terminal 2) the heterochromatic region (band p11) adjacent to the acrocentric short arm constriction contains nucleolar organizers (NOs), although bands p12 and 13 could not be excluded; and 3) band p11 probably has two different functional sites, a distal NO+ and a proximal NO-. Related studies on three C/G translocation carriers suggest a non-specific interphase interchromosomal relationship.
