A control study of dietary factors in renal stone formation.
Fifty-one first admission renal stone patients and an equal number of controls were interviewed and a dietary history of the average weekly intake was collected from each participant. A comparison of the dietary intake per kilogram body weight in each group was made using standard statistical procedures. None of the nutrient intakes showed a significant difference, but dietary fibre intake and the percentage of energy provided by carbohydrate were consistently higher in the control group, whereas the percentage of energy provided by fat was consistently higher in the renal stone group.
Standards in general practice. Effectiveness and efficiency.
This paper proposes that doctors need to accept the technical meaning of terms used in economics such as effectiveness, efficiency, cost, input, process, cost benefit and outcome. The usefulness of these terms is discussed, with examples, and it is agreed that effectiveness and efficiency are best examined by those whose behaviour must alter as a result of the analysis.
James Mackenzie and coronary heart disease.
Sir James Mackenzie's writings, especially his Diseases of the Heart, suggest that ischaemic heart disease, including myocardial infarction, was common in England at the beginning of the twentieth century.

A comparison of general practice in Britain and Ireland.
The work patterns of general practitioners in the British NHS and in the General Medical Services Scheme in the Republic of Ireland are compared. Doctors in the Republic have higher consultation and domiciliary visiting rates. These differences are not explainable in terms of the different age/sex structures of the populations under care.
Bone blood flow in the rat determined by the uptake of radioactive particles.
1. Two different suspensions of radioactive particles, 99Tcm-labelled microspheres and 59Fe-labelled resin particles, were injected into the rat central circulation in order to study the distribution of blood flow to the skeleton. 2. Measurements of particle uptake showed that the mean proportion of cardiac output flowing to the skeleton was 3-1%, a figure much lower than the valve of 27% found by Brookes (1970) in a similar experiment. 3. The blood flow per unit mass to individual bones covered a wide range.

Review of strontium 87m scintigraphy in the detection of skeletal metastases from mammary cancer.
Strontium 87m bone scanning was used in the assessment of 162 patients with breast cancer. Seventy-two patients had abnormal bone scans and in 63 (87 percent) these findings were subsequently confirmed. More metastases were detected by scanning and radiology than by radiology alone. There was a false positive rate of 7 percent. Of the 90 negative scans 23 showed evidence of metastasis either radiologically or at autopsy. This represented a false negative rate of 26 percent. The reasons for the false results are discussed particularly in relation to the problems of imaging the dorsal spine.
