Reducing delay in booking for antenatal care.
THE STUDY COMPARED TWO SCHEMES OF BOOKING FOR ANTENATAL CARE: booking at a health centre by general practitioners in conjunction with a hospital consultant or booking in a hospital clinic by hospital staff. the health centre scheme reduced the proportion of women booking late at 16 or more weeks gestation from 44% to 11% and at 20 weeks or more from 28% to 6%. There was no improvement in delay in booking owing to late confirmation of pregnancy. The benefits of this scheme were due to improved attendance and reduced delays in booking among women who confirmed pregnancy before 16 weeks gestation.

Thirty-five-day modified red cells and 7-day stored platelet concentrates from triple bags of identical PVC formulation.
There is continuous need for blood components with long shelf life. To this end the 'circle' triple pack has been modified to provide 35-day red cell and 7-day platelet concentrates, in PVC bags of identical formulation and 0.4 mm thick. The plasticizer is a mixture of DEHP and TOTM (CLX Mark II). The primary pack contains 63 ml of CP 277.5 mM glucose. The third pack contains 100 ml of citric acid 2 mM, trisodium citrate 20 mM, NaH2PO4 20 mM, NaCl 123 mM, glucose 40 mM, and adenine 1.26 mM. Plasma is adenine-free. With these modifications both hard- and soft-spun red cells gave satisfactory biochemical and autologous survival indices up to 35 days of storage, the haematocrit not exceeding 60%. Platelet concentrates were acceptable at 7 days of shelf-life.

Morningness-eveningness and diurnal variations in self-reported mood.
Effects of differences in morningness-eveningness (M-E) on diurnal variations in self-reported mood were examined in 28 female subjects. M-E was determined by using Horne and Ostberg's questionnaire, and mood by Mackay and his colleagues' stress arousal checklist. Self-reported arousal showed the expected pattern of variation across the day and this was found to be a function of subjects' M-E score. However, self-reported stress showed no significant differences due either to time of day or to subjects' M-E score. This confirms the independence of the two mood scales.
Evaluation of the MS-2 urine screening method for detection of bacteriuria.
A collaborative evaluation of the MS-2 urine screening system indicated that the automated method could successfully identify at least 84% of urine specimens that contained greater than or equal to 10(5) colony-forming units per ml. Most specimens not detected as positive by the system contained primarily diphtheroids and yeasts. Excluding those specimens which contained diphtheroids and yeasts, the MS-2 system correctly identified as positive 94.8% of specimens that contained greater than or equal to 10(5) colony-forming units per ml and as negative 96.1% of specimens that contained less than 10(4) colony-forming units per ml. The automated system is an attractive method for the screening of urine specimens for significant bacteriuria.

Preparation of fingernails for trace element analysis.
There are substantial differences in the reported elemental composition of human nails. Most investigators have used extensive washing procedures to minimize environmental contamination, however, such washing poses the risk of extraction of elements bound to the nail matrix. To determine if a portion of this variability could be accounted for by the "washing solutions" used by different investigators, nails were washed in nine solvents previously used for cleaning nails and their residual elemental composition measured by atomic absorption spectroscopy or energy dispersion analysis. In general, treatment with organic solvents resulted in less elemental loss than did treatment with aqueous detergents, while aqueous acids caused the greatest loss. Organic solvents more readily extracted iron and magnesium than calcium, copper and zinc. Virtually all of the magnesium was extracted by distilled water or aqueous detergents.
Theileriosis in Uganda. Parasitological and serological responses in cattle continually exposed to natural infection.
Cattle living in a circumscribed area in Uganda, where both Theileria parva and T. mutans occurred naturally, were monitored for periods of up to 1 year by examination of blood and lymph node smears for parasites and the indirect fluorescent antibody test for antibodies to Theileria. Uninfected control cattle were added at intervals to ensure continuous challenge and to monitor the challenge. Although all 29 control animals became infected with T. parva, challenge was light at first as mortality from theileriosis only commenced in the 18 introduced after day 138 of the study; 14 of these died of the disease. Most of the 34 animals in the original group appeared to be susceptible to T. parva at the start of the study and 6 died of theileriosis. All animals were, or became, infected with T. mutans. Several animals exhibited patent T. parva infections on more than 1 occasion and 1 died from the second infection indicating the existence of immunologically different strains. Recovered animals appeared to acquire eventually a solid immunity to the local Theileria strains but 9 of the original animals and 7 of the controls died exhibiting massive tick and helminth burdens, sometimes aggravated by the effects of previous T. parva and/or T. mutans infections.
Evaluation of the MS-2 system for rapid identification of Enterobacteriaceae.
The precision, accuracy, and other performance characteristics of the MS-2 (Abbott Laboratories, Diagnostic Division, Dallas, Tex.) system for the identification of Enterobacteriaceae were evaluated in a collaborative study involving three clinical laboratories. When identifying 150 unknown, coded organisms, the MS-2 system was 97%, 98%, and 93% accurate, respectively, in three laboratories. The system showed an overall accuracy of 94% when compared with conventional manual tube methods in identifying 1,154 clinical isolates of 26 species of Enterobacteriaceae. Discrepancies between automated and conventional methods were chiefly caused by biochemical variants, especially among Enterobacter species. The MS-2 system was rapid and simple to operate and produced printed results of bacterial identification in 5 h. The cost of disposable components compared favorably with commercial, visually read systems for identifying Enterobacteriaceae.
Ten years' experience in general practice of dip-slide urine culture in children under five years old.
Of 567 children under five registered with an industrial general practice over a 10-year period, 559 presented with symptoms of ill health in the first five years of life, and of these, 158 (27.9 per cent of those registered) had urine cultured using the dip-slide method. Thirty-four (12.3 per cent) girls and 23 (7.9 per cent) boys had at least one episode of significant bacteriuria. Two boys and three girls were found to have radiological abnormalities of the genito-urinary tract, of which two were obstructive lesions requiring surgery.Symptoms usually ascribed to the urinary tract in older children and adults did not discriminate for infection in this age group and were not a reliable indicator of the presence, or of the absence, of significant bacteriuria. The incidence of significant bacteriuria was considerably above that recorded by surveys on asymptomatic children. Proteus infections were four times more common among boys than girls, and under the age of three the proportion of boys with bacteriuria exceeded that of girls.Dip-slide culture is a valuable tool in the diagnosis, management, and follow-up of urinary tract infection.
