Millimeter-wave thermography--application to breast cancer.

Thermographic studies of 14 patients with breast carcinoma were performed using two millimeter wave scanners for 30 and 68 GHz. Small correlation with infrared thermograms was observed indicating the depth sensing capabilities of millimeter waves. Correlation with mammographic and other clinical findings was good for tumors with medium subcutaneous depth. These preliminary results indicate a need for a statistically more significant number of cases, extension towards lower sensing frequencies and experiments on postoperative specimens and phantom models.

Expression of retrovirus-associated 8S RNA in mammalian cells.

A comparative study of the expression of retrovirus-associated 8S RNA was made in different mammalian cells. This RNA is found in cultured cells from all mammalian species analysed but its expression varies. An increase of 8S RNA is observed in sarcoma virus-transformed cells as compared to control uninfected cells or cells infected with leukaemia virus. No increased quantities of 8S RNA were detected in cells transformed by SV40 or by methylcholanthrene. These data show that the level of 8S RNA was augmented following transformation by sarcoma viruses.

[Methods available for measuring temperature (author's transl)].

Numerous techniques are in use in medicine for temperature determination either from thermal conduction phenomena, or from hot body radiations. These are essentially thermometry, radiometry and thermography. During attempts to treat cancer by hyperthermia, temperature knowledge, at the level of the target volume and the adjoining parts, is essential. These deep temperature measurements are yet a problem and certainly need new sensor technologies.

[Murine type C endogenous virus expression in murine 129 teratocarcinoma cell line].

Murine type C viral information is detectable in the cellular genome of both differentiated and undifferentiated cell lines derived from 129 Mouse teratocarcinoma. Cytoplasmic RNA expression which is negligible in differentiated cells, is significantly higher in multipotential undifferentiated cells. Furthermore it was observed that in vitro differentiation of multipotent cells leads to a decrease of this expression.

[Scintigraphic characteristics of coxopathies: etiologic importance].

Morphological and quantitative studies of the uptake of diphosphonates labelled with technetium 99m were done on 179 pathological hips : 106 aseptic osteonecroses of the femoral head, including 20 at an early stage, 11 algodystrophias (transitory osteoporoses of the hip), 20 coxarthrosis, 16 cases of Paget's disease, 12 isolated malignant lesions of the femoral neck. The location, extent and intensity of the uptake are very variable and depend not only on the etiology of the lesions but also on their stage of evolution. Bone scintigraphy provides, for numerous pathological hips, pieces of information which complete the results of the clinical, radiological and biological study, with which it should always be compared. It can shed light on the etiologic diagnosis of a painful hip at the beginning of its evolution, before the appearance of rare x-ray signs, thanks to certain very precise characteristics of the labelling. This is the case for algdystrophias, osteonecroses, coxitis and strain fractures of the femoral neck.

[Interpretation of and indications for bone scintiscans].

The interpretatiton of a bone radioisotope scan requires perfect knowledge of normal skeletal appearances, shadows outside the bones and the various methods of expression of bony lesions: generally hyperfixations but sometimes isofixations or even hypofixations. A bone scan permits one to make an overall assessment of multiple bony lesions, determine the extent of a lesion, detect bony complications of a disease or treatment and seek the bony origin of a pain.

Gangliosides of active and inactive neuroblastoma clones.

It is possible to divide neuroblastoma cells into clones able to synthesize neurotransmitters (active clones) or not (inactive clones). The analysis of gangliosides of active and inactive clones shows that their total lipid sialic acids is markedly lower than that of neuron-enriched fractions prepared from brain. The ganglioside pattern of the cultured cells also differs notably from those obtained with neuronal fractions from brain. The absence of tri- and tetrasialogangliosides and the presence of appreciable amounts of the simplest monosialogangliosides are particularly noticeable in the neuroblastoma. Morphological differentiation obtained by serum deprivation, dibutyryl cyclic AMP or bromodeoxyuridine does not restore a true neuronal pattern. Gangliosides could not therefore be used as a marker of neuronal differentiation in this type of cell. No correlations can be found between the ganglioside pattern and the ability of cells to synthesize neurotransmitters.

Essential fatty acid metabolism in cultured astroblasts.

The fetal calf serum on which two astroblast cell lines were grown was shown to be deficient in essential fatty acids. The fatty acid profiles of lipids of these two cell lines showed very low amounts of polyunsaturated fatty acids. In order to know if this low level of unsaturation was due to the lack of essential fatty acids in serum, or to a lack of desaturase activities in the cells, we have investigated the modifications of the cell lipid fatty acid patterns when serum was enriched in essential fatty acids. Linoleic acid was incorporated in rather high amounts in the cell lipids, while linolenic acid was very poorly incorporated. These two essential fatty acids were converted into polyunsaturated fatty acids only when they were added alone to the serum. Both cell clones exhibited a lack in the delta 4 desaturase activity. No morphological changes of the cells occured after nine days of culture with modified serum.

Glycosphingolipids from cultured astroblasts.

The glycolipids of two clonal lines astroblasts, NN clone and C6 clone, were studied. Glucosylceramide and lactosylceramide were present at very low levels in both clones, but the most common myelin glycolipids galactosylceramide and sulfatide, were not detected. The ganglioside pattern of these cells was rather simple, with GM3 as main compoenent, accompained in one clone by GD3. These results are quite different from those observed on astroglia-enriched fractions isolated from brain. The fatty acid composition of these glycolipids was studied. Long chain fatty acids, up to lignoceric acid, were found in appreciable amounts, even in gangliosides. It is difficult to conclude if these glycolipid patterns are due to the properties of normal astroblasts, to transformation, or to a tumoral character of our cell lines.
