Aortography in the diagnosis of cancer.

The role of angiography in the diagnosis of cancer includes the direct visualization of the tumor, the demonstration of its size, extent and possible metastasis. The criteria which are used to judge the prognosis of a tumor include the size, angiographic appearance, relationship to adjacent organs and tissues, growth or extension into draining veins and the presence or absence of metastasis. Chemotherapeutic agents can be instilled through the same catheters that are used for angiography and these catheters may be left in place from five to eight days.

Effects of terconazole and other azole antifungal agents on the sterol and carbohydrate composition of Candida albicans.

The effects of terconazole, a triazole antifungal, on the sterol and carbohydrate composition of Candida albicans was compared with that of three imidazoles: clotrimazole, miconazole, and butoconazole. Exposure of C. albicans to terconazole resulted in a profound depletion of ergosterol with a corresponding increase in lanosterol content versus control cells. Carbohydrate analysis revealed a significant (245%) increase in chitin and a minimal effect on glucan and mannan in terconazole-treated cells. Similar effects on sterol and carbohydrate composition were observed with clotrimazole and miconazole. Butoconazole had a similar effect on sterol composition but had no effect on carbohydrate composition. The decreased ergosterol and increased lanosterol content is consistent with 14 alpha-demethylase inhibition by terconazole and the other azoles. The increase in cell wall chitin is most likely due to deregulation of chitin synthesis secondary to ergosterol depletion in the cell membrane. Because both chitin and ergosterol are critical components of the fungal cell, perturbation of the production and localization of these components by terconazole is likely to contribute to the selective toxicity of this compound for C. albicans and other fungi.

Highly polymorphic minisatellite sequences: allele frequencies and mutation rates for five locus-specific probes in a Caucasian population.

Six human minisatellite sequences (MS1, MS8, MS29, MS31, MS43, g3) have been subcloned into a stable host/vector system. Allele frequencies at the hypervariable loci detected by five of these probes were determined in a Caucasian population (200 individuals). Mendelian inheritance has been demonstrated in 5 large multi-generation pedigrees. The mutation rate has been determined in 59 families. The highest mutation rate was observed with MS1, as might be predicted from the observed high heterozygosity and in agreement with previous direct measurement of germ line mutation rates. The data presented on allele frequencies and mutation rates provide preliminary data supporting the use of these probes in paternity analysis and forensic investigations.

Psoriasis susceptibility locus in chromosome region 3q21 identified in patients from southwest Sweden.

We have performed a pair-wise linkage study in the search for psoriasis susceptibility regions. A preliminary scan was performed on 20 families. In this set we obtained indications of linkage on chromosome 3q21. This region was further investigated using material from a total of 104 families (set 1B) resulting in a non-parametric linkage (NPL) of 1.77. The material was stratified in families whose parental origin is in southwest Sweden (set 1C). A maximum NPL value of 2.77 was obtained in this group. A transmission disequilibrium test (TDT) was performed on the stratified material (set 1C) and a significant P value of 0.005 was obtained, at marker D3S1269. The locus was confirmed with TDT in replicate material consisting of 148 families in which a single member was affected (P value 0.0007) at marker D3S1551. Thus, we have observed a significant P value using TDT in the vicinity of markers D3S1269/D3S1551, suggesting a novel psoriasis susceptibility region.

Internal fixation of a displaced tibial sesamoid fracture.

The authors present a surgical technique for the preservation and repair of an acutely fractured sesamoid using internal fixation of the sesamoid. A case report demonstrating the technique for the open reduction and internal fixation of a fractured tibial sesamoid is presented. The authors recommend this procedure as a viable alternative to surgical excision of the tibial sesamoid. The use of the procedure as an adjunct for the surgical treatment of recalcitrant traumatic sesamoiditis is also discussed.
