Apollo: a sequence annotation editor.

The well-established inaccuracy of purely computational methods for annotating genome sequences necessitates an interactive tool to allow biological experts to refine these approximations by viewing and independently evaluating the data supporting each annotation. Apollo was developed to meet this need, enabling curators to inspect genome annotations closely and edit them. FlyBase biologists successfully used Apollo to annotate the Drosophila melanogaster genome and it is increasingly being used as a starting point for the development of customized annotation editing tools for other genome projects.

Differential solubilities in subregions of the membrane: a nonsteric mechanism of drug specificity.

We studied the effect of four volatile anesthetics and convulsants on the GABA- and glutamate-induced conductance change in crab muscle. The intensity of drug action correlated with the solubility parameter (delta) values of the four drugs. Thus, the higher that value was for a given drug, the stronger was its effect on the glutamate response but the weaker was it on the response to gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). We suggest that different gating molecules are housed in specific subregions of the membrane, each characterized by a particular value of the solubility parameter. The differential distribution of drugs in these subregions may be a nonsteric mechanism for drug specificity.

Disseminated intravascular coagulation associated with toxic epidermal necrolysis (Lyell's syndrome).

Evidence of disseminated intravascular coagulation was recorded in eight patients with toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN)--Lyell's syndrome. Patients were treated with low doses of heparin in combination with the usual treatment of TEN, i.e. maintenance of fluid and electrolyte balance, systemic corticosteroids, antibiotics and aseptic dressings, in the Intensive Care Unit environment. It is suggested that the alteration of haemostasis and inter-related biological systems, such as activation of components of complement, kinins and immunoglobulins, may affect the outcome of TEN.

[Liquid-liquid extraction for the quantitative determination of sorbed drugs in polyethylene. Part 40: Contributions to the problems of the use of plastic containers for liquid dosage forms (author's transl)].

Salicylic acid was used as a model substance to establish the conditions under which liquid-liquid extraction will yield reproducible results when applied in sorption studies. As the low-density polyethylene used is soluble in toluene only at a temperature above 80 degrees C, an extraction apparatus was developed for transferring salicylic acid from the hot lipophil phase to an appropriate aqueous phase. After optimization of the experimental conditions, the recovery rate was 82.6% with a standard deviation of +/- 2.9%. The procedure is suited for routine determinations of water-extractable sorbed substances.

[Accuracy of lymphography in carcinoma of the cervix (author's transl)].

A review has been made of lymphographic diagnoses recorded from patients with cervical carcinoma over more than five years. The diagnosis by lymphography of nodes metastases had to be altered in some 25 per cent, and correction proved necessary also in cases in which lymphography had failed to yield conclusive information. - In the group with lymphographically secured cancer lymph nodes coincided with histological results in 70 per cent of all primary and 90 per cent of secondary checks. Comparable gaps were recorded also from the group with lymphographically inconclusive information on lymph node cancer. - The following conclusions are drawn from the study described: (a) The accuracy of lymphographic diagnosis depends on the experiences of the examiner and changes within time and this must be considered in the evaluation of therapeutic success or failure. - (b) Conclusive findings in the context of lymph node problems are obtainable from selective use of lymphography.

[Possibilities of variation in skip pendulum irradiation (author's transl)].

Irradiation techniques should be judged not by dose distribution only but also by the effort necessary for their realization. Skip pendulum irradiation is a technique excelling not only through suitable dose distribution but through effortless adjustment as well. The possibilities of variation in skip pendulum irradiation are examined, a schedule facilitates the choice of field breadth and pendulum angle. Skip pendulum irradiation should gain importance, too, for the bremsstrahlung from a linear accelerator.
