[On the ontogenic character of the "Pierre Marie-Behague's test" and its utilization in the study of spatial orientation by patients with senile dementia (author's transl)].

This study is part of a series of researches conducted since some fifteen years in the geriatric department of the "Clinique Psychiatrique Universitaire de Genève". Its purpose is to investigate how and why old people are oriented/disoriented in space. In addition to the methods generally used in similar works, i.e. observation and questionnaires, the authors are preoccupied in understanding the mechanisms: in order to better define the concept of orientation, on the one hand, and to help the patients' adaptation, on the other hand. The results a) show that the Pierre Marie - Behague's Test of direction evince patterns of behaviour that correspond to developmental stages; b) permit the authors to give typical descriptions of patients with senile dementia. The analysis was qualitative rather than quantitative and similar to that used in genetic psychology. The results demonstrate that this approach is fruitful when adapted to geriatric research.

[Body image and J. de Ajuriaguerra's psychotherapeutic relaxation in geriatric psychiatry. Body consciousness in the elderly patient].

The ability of the elderly to adapt to their surroundings during illness, particularly mental illness, increases with (both the patient's and the therapist's) understanding of how subjective feelings about one's own body. The author bases his observations on ten years of clinical experience in Geriatric Psychiatry with the relaxation techniques developed by J. de Ajuriaguerra. He also draws attention to difficulties stemming from introduction of the concept of body identity, a notion on which, more often than not, discussion focuses spontaneously during therapy.

[Adansonian classification and identification of psychrotrophic "Pseudomonas" from raw milk held at low temperature (author's transl)].

Seventy-nine strains representative of the dominant flora of raw milk held for 5 days at 4 - 5 degrees C were submitted to an Adansonian classification involving 77 criteria, mainly biochemical ones. Seventy-eight strains had most of the characters in common with the fluorescent group of Pseudomonas described by Stanier and coworkers. About half of these bacteria could be identified as P. fluorescens, despite the fact that some strains showed a few discrepancies from the ideal phenotype. The other half were intermediate between P. fluorescens and P. putida. These results and those of other workers, associated to ecological considerations, lead the author to contest the current models used for the identification of the fluorescent Pseudomonas.

[African vesico-vaginal fistulas (author's transl)].

Obstetrical vesico-vaginal fistulas in Africa are very frequent and are correlated with the insufficiency or even the lack of health structures and sanitary conditions. They follow up a dystocic parturition, and their prevention requires a correct surveillance of pregnancy and parturition. Their pathogenesis consists in a durable compression of the pelvic cavity by the foetal head, inducing ischemia and later on necrosis. Their difficult treatment is based on clinical inspection which makes possible to distinguish several pathological types of fistulas. Surgical tactic will be selected according to the size of the fistula, the conservation or the destruction of the uretra with the vesico-uretral sphincters, the importance of perifistula sclerosis. BRACQUEHAYE'S operation is the basis of the conservatory treatment, associated or not with a technic restoring the urinary continence: either the INGELMAN-SUNDBERG operation of the LE GUYADER rectomyoplasty. When uretra is destroyed, the best palliative intervention is probably the building up of a rectal neobladder. These operations can be performed under conditions often prevailling in Africa. In most cases, they have restored normal social life for the women affected. But setbacks are not rare, and demonstrate the importance of prophylaxis.

[Attempt to determine by chaetotaxy the genus of a microphallid cercaria parasiting Cerithium meditteraneum Deshayes (author's transl)].

Chetotaxy of a cercaria parasite of Cerithium meditteraneum is studied. Sensory receptors C III, St V, St DL, AID, PI and U, are similar to those of Maritrema linguilla and Maritrema subdolum. However in the three cercariae, the ventral, dorsal and lateral papillae, except AID and PI (V, L, D) are different. The chetotaxy of this cercariae shows that they belong to the genus Maritrema. Investigations of the biological cycle are under way to verifie this hypothesis.

A cardiovascular health needs assessment of university students living in residence.

The purpose of this study was to determine the cardiovascular health needs of university students living in residence. A survey was administered to students living in residence at a university in Nova Scotia, Canada to identify eating patterns, physical activity, smoking behaviours and perceived stress. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and chi-square tests of association. Qualitative data were collected using focus group interviews. Results showed that fewer than half of the students participated in exercise three or more times per week, and 82% are less than the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables. As perceived knowledge of CVD increased so did level of physical activity and consumption of fruits and vegetables. Fifty-six percent of students rated their stress as high or very high; exams and course assignments are a major cause of this stress. Fifteen percent of the university students surveyed were daily smokers. Barriers to a healthy lifestyle include time constraints and limited food choices in the residence cafeteria.
