Inhibition of in vivo isoproterenol-induced tachycardia by i.v. amiodarone was studied in anesthetized dogs. Significant dose-response curves to isoproterenol could not be obtained in single animals because of the time-dependent lowering of the inhibitory effect of the drug. Single isoproterenol injections after amiodarone in 105 dogs allowed dose-response curves to be obtained. The slope of these curves decreased with increasing doses of amiodarone, and the maximal rate stimulation diminished also in a dose-dependent manner. These features are consistent with a non-competitive inhibition pattern. A mechanism of the beta-adrenergic antagonism developed by amiodarone is suggested.
Several methods have been tried in attempts to purify the lymphocytes of chicken blood. The most efficient one is based upon the properties of adhesion of the polymorphonuclears and monocytes. With the use of a column filled with synthetic fibers, held at 37 degrees C., a high rate of lymphocyte purification was obtained. Sedimentation and centrifugation then resulted in the elimination of almost all of the erythrocytes. The final product was homogeneous and the lymphocytes obtained kept the physiological and metabolic properties necessary for their culture.

Forty-seven patients with pelvi-lingual (mostly T4) cancers treated bAE intra-arteri chemotherapy (I.A.C.) were studied histologiccaly to discover the effects of the chemotherapy. The results observed were classified according to a six degree histological scale ranging from total absence of tumoral regression to complete involution of the cancer. The product used, dosage, time lapse, clinical regression and histological formula were compared with the histological findings. The results were also compared with those obtained with other pelvilingual cancers treated by radiation and primary surgery and with cancers of the facial masse after I.A.C. In the event, 10 tumours remained unchanged after I.A.C., 30 showed more or less marked changes and 7 completely regressed. Furthermore, the metastatic ganglia underwent the same involution as the primary tumour. A survey of survival in relation to tumoral regression, showed that, after a sufficient time lapse, of the 17 patients with considerable tumoral modification, 11 were in a satisfactory condition after 4 or 5 years (65%). Pelvi-lingual cancers are therefore a good indication for I.A.C. which gives very encouraging results.

L 9146 or 2-methyl-3(3,5 dimethyl-4-gamma-di-n-butylaminopropoxy-benzoyl)-benzo [b] thiophene is a substance belonging to the amiodarone series which induces in the anaesthetized dog a decrease of myocardial oxygen consumption which is mainly due to slowing of the heart rate and reduction in systemic blood pressure. L 9146 also enhances coronary blood flow. L 9146 has also antiadrenergic properties since catecholamine-induced hypertension, tachycardia and increase of myocardial oxygen consumption are markedly antagonized; these antiacrenergic effects are not due to a competitive blockade of the beta-adrenoceptors. L 9146 does not decrease cardiac output, but increases it appreciably in the initial phase of its action. Several findings indicate that when the intensity of certain properties is considered, l9146 is more active than aniodarone since only half the dose used with aniodarone is required to achieve a given level of action. The overall haemodynamic properties of L 9146, which are similar to those of amiodarone, are considered to be potentially valuable for the long-term treatment of angina pectoris.
On a three years base experience in the geriatric department of Geneva's university psychiatric clinic, the paper studies among practical problems encountered in the application in institutional geriatry of relaxation, those related to therapists' training and to the nature of therapy control established for them and their patients. Problems pertaining to the management of the cure according to the method of J. de Ajuriaguerra amd M. Cahen are viewed, and the position of relaxation in the post-graduate psychiatric training defined. The study also mentions the influence of relaxation applied to the aged patient on his human environment in and out of the hospital. These notes are complementary to those already presented on the indications of relaxation in geriatry, the way body is preceived by the aged patient through relaxation, and it's consequences on the adjustment of an aging person.
On a three years base experience in the geriatiic department of Geneva's University Psychiatric Clinic the paper studies the problem of selecting aged patients to be treated by relaxation according to the method of J. De Ajuriaguerra et M. Cahen. Observations are presented in an attempt to define three main points: a) the role played by relaxation when there is an objective [corrected] impairment of the body's integrity; b) relaxation effect on aged persons neurotic states evolution; c) the reality of considering dementia as a counter-indication of relaxation therapy. These remarks complete those presented previously about the training of therapists in relaxation, the type of control to be organized for them and their patients, the technical management of the cure, the place of relaxation in the post graduate psychiatric training, the effects of the therapy on the patients human environnement behavior in and out of the hospital, the way body is perceived through relaxation by the aged patients and it's consequences on the adjustment of an aging person.
