Psychiatric diagnosis of chronic pain patients.

Using DSM-III, the authors reviewed the psychiatric diagnoses of 43 patients evaluated over a 1-year period by a university medical center pain board and found that 98% of the patients had an axis I disorder and 37% had an axis II disorder. The findings are discussed in relationship to earlier findings and treatment implications.

Conversion of potentially lethal damage to lethal damage in Escherichia coli inhibited by caffeine.

In E. coli cells with potentially lethal damage to their DNA are starved of amino acids they rapidly lose viability (Koukalová and Kuhrová 1980). This phenomenon is called secondary lethality (SL). In the course of secondary lethality there is a decrease in the molecular weight of DNA to a value on average three times lower (DNA fragmentation, and part of the DNA is reduced to acid-soluble fractions (DNA degradation). Caffeine inhibits SL, and both these processes of DNA decay, The lowest effective concentration 5 mg/ml, with maximum effect at a concentration of 10 mg/ml. SL is also inhibited by the absence of an energy source. The possible mechanism of SL is discussed on the basis of these results.

Primary cutaneous malignant melanoma metastatic to the iris.

We describe a case of cutaneous malignant melanoma metastatic to the iris as the first presenting sign of metastases 10 years after excision of the primary tumour. The histology of the excised iris metastases and the primary skin melanoma are compared. Progressive intracranial metastatic growth did not correlate with the observed regression of the residual intraocular melanoma cells during cyclical cytotoxic therapy.

Ability of chloramphenicol to suppress phenotypically some bacterial mutations.

Chloramphenicol (CLP) at slightly inhibitory concentrations (3-5 microgram/ml) suppresses the inhibition of DNA synthesis and cell division caused by the temperature sensitive mutation dnaE486 at the nonpermissive temperature. Some other mutations can also be phenotypically suppressed by CLP. A similar effect is shown by chlortetracycline. Phenotypic suppression is caused by both these drugs in different cases than by streptomycin.

[Absorption and metabolism of glycerin in the neonatal period. I. Speed of turnover of glycerin during continuous intravenous infusions in newborn infants of various gestational ages and in older infants].

Glycerol was infused intravenously over 2 hours in preterm and term appropriate-for-date and in term small-for-date infants at the age of 12 to 72 hours and 10 to 14 days and in infants at the age of 3 to 8 months. The dosage was 0.25.kg-1.h-1 and 0.5.kg-1.h-1, respectively. Less than 6 per cent of the glycerol injused were recovered in the urine irrespective of the dosage. The total clearance was 9.1 to 14.6 ml.kg-1. min-1 during the first weeks of life with 0.25 g.kg-1.h-1 glycerol irrespective of gestational age and intra-uterine growth retardation; and it rose to 31.8 ml.kg-1.min-1 in older infants. With 0.5.kg-1.h-1 glycerol the total clearance values were lower in all groups. The glucose blood level and the blood lactate concentration as well as the parameters of the acid-base-balance were not significantly influenced by glycerol.

Control of and synthesis in Lactobacillus acidophilus Role of RNA and free amino acids.

In Lactobacillus acidophilus, the DNA synthesis in cells incubated in the absence of essential amino acids reaches levels corresponding to the initiation of further replication cycles than just to completing the cycles already running. This "relaxation of DNA synthesis" is stimulated by the presence of inhibitors of protein synthesis and by the presence of deoxyadenylate. These enhancements of DNA replication are cancelled by actinomycin D. In the presence of inhibitors of protein synthesis, the relaxtion of DNA synthesis is further stimulated by free amino acids. The effect of free amino acids, unlike in the former cases, is not inhibited by actinomycin D. It proposed that the chromosome replication in Lactobacillus acidophilus is regulated similarly as in some plasmids, i.e. independently of the synthesis of protein, depending on the synthesis of RNA and, in addition, on the presence of free amino acids.

Properties of the cured oncogenic strain 37400 of Agrobacterium tumefaciens.

The properties of the 37400 oncogenic strain of Agrobacterium tumefaciens are described. This strain was derived from the VI lysogenic strain originally isolated by Hamilton from a Zinnia elegans tumour. Strain 37400 has a number of properties which render it suitable for quantitative and genetic studies. It is cured of prophages and can serve as a universal sensitive indicator for a number of phages isolated from various lysogenic strains of Agrobacterium tumefaciens. Its good growth properties in synthetic media and at elevated temperatues enable the isolation of auxotrophic mutants and temperature sensitive phage mutants. Preliminary experiments show that strain 37400 will serve as suitable starting material for conjugation experiments under defined conditions.

Factors influencing patient satisfaction with the results of esthetic plastic surgery.

The Wise pattern is a convenient tool for marking the outlines of the areola recipient site, and for marking the lower skin flaps of the "skin brassiere" in most of the currently used operations for mammary hypertrophy and ptosis. We find it useful, at times, to draw the pattern outline before making a final decision on which procedure to do. Rather than limiting the surgeon's judgement, these preoperative marks leave a wide spectrum of options open to meet the esthetic requirements, while keeping the basic landmarks properly located.
