Ethical considerations in the practice of allergy.

The great effort of specialty societies to maintain post-graduate education on a high level should be complemented by an equal effort to promote high ethical standards. In the practice of allergy by non-allergists the same ethical and scientific guidelines should be observed as by allergists and it should be the responsibility of the societies to see to it that our specialty offers the patient care based on knowledge but most of all on common sense and commitment.

Eosinophils and the integrity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis.

The level of blood eosinophils was studied in patients with adrenalectomy and/or hypophysectomy and in patients with asthma and eosinophilia. In the latter group was a patient who had asthma associated with hypopituitarism, which is cited in detail. It is concluded that blood eosinophils are independent from the integrity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis.

Alteration of the response of guinea pigs to freund's complete adjuvant by ascaris extract: a preliminary histologic study.

Freund's adjuvant has been asserted to cause systemic complications in man similar to those occurring with B.C.G. vaccine. In search of factors predisposing to such complications of this vaccine, the potential role of a coexisting parasitic infestation was considered. A potentiating effect of the ascaris antigen on the pathological changes produced in guinea pigs by intraperitoneally injected Freund's complete adjuvant was noted. The pertinency of this observation to immunotherapy of cancer with B.C.G. is purely speculative.

Dudenal ulceration in allergic children.

Forty-three children were studied. All had allergies and peptic ulceration. Twenty-five of them had a demonstrated niche on roentgenological examination. The "functional" stomach ache, often observed in allergic children, might be explained by the organic changes. It is postulated that these changes are influenced by the action of the chemical mediators, liberated during allergic reactions and by multiple accompanying allergies of childhood.
