A case is reported of extravasation of radio-opaque contrast medium into the duodenal wall surrounding the papilla of Vater during endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). This is a particularly uncommon complication of this relatively new technique in gastrointestinal investigation. The uneventful and complete recovery in the case reported here is in line with the clinical progress of the few previously reported patients who developed this complication.

The relationships between 10 behavioral descriptions and 10 Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) scale names were judged by 28 naive and 26 experienced student subjects. Both groups of judges produced large amounts of illusory correlation, with the experienced judges producing more. Estimates of strength of semantic association between the behavioral descriptions and scale names provided by 45 naive and 18 experienced male and female subjects tended to support the notion that semantic association is an important factor in producing illusory correlations, but there were some interesting exceptions to this tendency. The testing model was discussed as an analogue to the clinical situation.

Using multivariate statistical techniques, a large number of variables describing medical school characteristics was reduced to five general dimensions of variation. Patterns of factor scores on these five dimensions served as the basis of a typology of 107 U.S. medical schools. The types of schools so identified were found to be related to the proportions of graduates entering different areas of medicine.
Apparent size of the photosynthetic unit (chlorophyll/O(2) per flash) was estimated by O(2) yield of repetitive short flashes on cell samples taken at various times from a synchronized culture (14-hour light, 10-hour dark) of Scenedesmus obliquus. Unit size was essentially invariant (< 10% variation) with a mean value of 1750 chlorophyll/O(2) per flash. In contrast, the light-saturated photosynthetic rate per unit chlorophyll, or turnover rate of the photosynthetic unit, varied with the life cycle, rising 40% in the first three hours of the light period and decaying slowly thereafter. The results are taken as evidence that the metabolic machinery is subject to far greater control and adjustment than is the photochemical machinery.
