Trimethoprim-polymyxin ophthalmic solution versus chloramphenicol ophthalmic solution in the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis.

Forty patients with a diagnosis of presumptive bacterial conjunctivitis were treated with either trimethoprim-polymyxin or chloramphenicol ophthalmic solutions in a randomized, double-blind trial. No significant differences could be demonstrated between the results of 7-days' treatment with the two preparations and both solutions were found to be effective in improving the signs and symptoms of surface ocular bacterial infection. No adverse reactions were reported in either treatment group.

A one-stage correction of mandibular defects using a split sternum pectoralis major osteo-musculocutaneous transfer.

This paper describes a technique of mandibular reconstruction using the sternal skin and the outer table of the sternum transferred as a compound osteo-musculocutaneous flap based on the pectoralis major muscle. The technique has been used for immediate reconstruction at the time of cancer ablation but it can equally well be used as a delayed reconstructive procedure.

Asthma hyperventilation and emotion.

Hyperventilation in asthmatic subjects causes airways obstruction as demonstrated by a fall in the Forced Expiratory Volume in one second. Clinically, measurements of blood gases during asthmatic attacks have shown that asthmatic subjects, who hyperventilate have a blood carbon dioxide level below normal unless ventilatory failure occurs. Two methods of demonstrating that asthmatic subjects hyperventilate on the thought of asthma were employed. 1. Chronic asthmatic subjects had their respiratory minute volume measured during relaxation and at the recall of an asthmatic attack. The mean minute volume rose from 10.1 litres when relaxed to 13.5 litres when recalling an asthmatic attack (p < .025). 2. Asthmatic volunteers had their respiratory minute volume measured during relaxation and on the hypnotic suggestion of anger, fright and asthma and pleasurable excitement, both in the conscious state and under hypnosis. The data were statistically treated by an analysis of variance. All emotion resulted in a significant increase in minute volume at the 0.1 level of significance.

A useful method for the analysis of growth studies.

A group of parsimonious models for the analysis of animal growth curves is presented. The effects of correlations between the successive weights are reduced by analyzing the weight gained between the different weighing times. A model is developed for the resulting two-way table of group average gain curves (group by periods), using the two-way table modeling techniques proposed by Mandel. The coefficients in the fitted model are examined to determine what functions of the weight gain measurements will summarize the characteristics of the curves. In the second part of the analysis these statistics are computed for each animal and analyzed to determine the effects of the design variables on the growth of the animals. Experience has shown that in many instances total weight gain summarizes all the information in the curve. The conditions under which total gain provides an adequate summary are discussed. The model has been used in the analysis of rat, dog, hamster, guinea pig and swine growth curves. An example is included to illustrate the utility of the proposed approach.

Acetohydroxamic acid: clinical studies of a urease inhibitor in patients with staghorn renal calculi.

The hydrolysis of urea by the bacterial enzyme urease pathologically increase urinary ammonia, bicarbonate, carconate and alkalinity. These factors contribute to the formation of urinary stones and to the virulence of bacteria. Acetohydroxamic acid, a potent inhibitor of urease, has been administered to 23 patients with staghorn renal calculi and urea-splitting urinary infection. Urinary ammonia and alkalinity has been reduced in every patient. A dose of 1.0 gm. acetohydroxamic acid daily has been well tolerated and effective for 2 to 12 months, even in patients with impaired renal function.

Trimethoprim-polymyxin B sulfate cream versus fusidic acid cream in the treatment of pyodermas.

One hundred patients with a clinical diagnosis of a primary or secondary superficial pyoderma were entered into a double-blind study. They were allocated treatment with either trimethoprim-polymyxin B sulfate cream or fusidic acid cream according to a fully randomized treatment code. Data suitable for evaluation were obtained from 87 patients, and statistical analysis revealed trimethoprim-polymyxin B sulfate (TP) cream to be significantly better than fusidic acid cream in alleviation several of the individual signs and symptoms associated with pyogenic infection of the skin as well as in reducing the overall severity score at the end of the 2-week study period.

Trimethoprim-polymyxin B sulphate cream compared with fusidic acid cream in the treatment of superficial bacterial infection of the skin.

Trimethoprim-polymyxin B sulphate cream or fusidic acid cream was used to treat 64 patients with primary or secondary superficial bacterial infections of the skin in a randomized, double-blind controlled trial. Both treatments were effective in alleviating the clinical signs and symptoms associated with bacterial infection. A cream containing a combination of 0.17 mg/g trimethoprim and 10,000 IU/g polymyxin B sulphate was, however, significantly more effective than a 20 mg/g fusidic acid cream in reducing the signs of crust and tenderness.
