A questionnaire designed to assess the prevalence of psychoactive substance use and its relation with: (a) central nervous system risk factors, (b) associated disorders (allergies, migraine-type headaches, developmental dyslexia history, smoking, suicide attempt, and sleep disorders), and (c) cognitive-type symptoms, was given to a general population sample of 1,879 university students (mean age = 24.0) from Bogotá (Colombia, South America). A prevalence of 3.4% of self-reported psychoactive substance use was found. Results indicated that the incidence of some risk factors of minor brain injury or dysfunction, smoking, suicide attempt, and headache was higher among the self-reported psychoactive substance users than among nonusers. Cognitive-type symptoms, except suicide ideation, did not differ between drug users and nonusers. Current results point to a significant association between psychoactive substance use and depressive symptoms, and there was no significant association between psychoactive substance use and psychotic ideation.

Fifty-seven patients with advanced gastric carcinoma were randomized to receive 15 mg/kg/week of 5-fluorouracil by either the iv or oral route. Toxic effects of treatment included nausea and vomiting (40% with the oral route versus 35% with the iv route) and myelosuppression, with a wbc count of less than 4000/mm3 (28% with the oral route versus 32% with the iv route). The frequency of partial response was 12% (three of 25 patients) for the oral route and 16% (five of 32 patients) for the iv route. Only two of 36 patients with liver metastases responded. No advantage was seen for the oral versus the iv route of 5-fluorouracil in the treatment of advanced gastric carcinoma.

Inhaled 99mTc-labelled particles have been used to assess mucus clearance from peripheral, intermediate and inner lung zones of 12 patients with stable asthma. The method of analysis relies on a ventilation image with 81mKr to estimate the distribution of radioaerosol alveolar deposition so that clearance from each zone can be related just to particles deposited in the ciliated conducting airways. In calculating clearance from intermediate and inner lung zones, allowance is made for particles transported into these zones from more distal regions of the lung. Peripheral zone clearance in the asthmatic subjects improved significantly (p less than 0.01) after four weeks of corticosteroid treatment (two weeks on 15 mg prednisolone orally each day, plus two weeks on 30 mg). No significant change occurred in clearance from the inner zone when all patients were considered together. However, the six patients who prior to treatment coughed relatively infrequently did show a significant (p less than 0.05) increase in clearance from the inner zone as well as from the peripheral zone.

Inhaled radioaerosol particles have been used to assess mucus clearance in 12 patients with stable asthma. Patients who coughed frequently showed faster clearance than those who coughed infrequently. Treatment with medium and high dose oral corticosteroids reduced coughing and thereby reliance on mucus transport by cough. Despite this, and despite increased penetration of the particles into the bronchial tree, mean particle clearance was slightly faster after four week treatment (two weeks on 15 mg prednisolone orally each day, plus two weeks on 30 mg). Mean clearance remained, however, markedly slower than in normal subjects. Five patients who were initially sputum producers (mean 1.4 g . h-1) ceased to produce sputum after four week treatment.
Ninety-six patients with metastatic breast cancer were entered in a prospectively randomized trial comparing a five-drug doxorubicin (Adriamycin)-containing regimen given in two different schedules. Both regimens included cyclophosphamide, methotrexate, 5-FU, prednisone, and doxorubicin. On one schedule, referred to as "combination" treatment, doxorubicin was given every 21 days and cyclophosphamide was given daily. On the less intensive "fixed-rotation" schedule, doxorubicin was given on alternative cycles every 42 days and cyclophosphamide was given for 21 days of the 42-day cycle. Response frequency and survival were comparable among patients receiving either regimen. Significantly less (P < 0.05) nausea and leukopenia occurred on the fixed-rotation schedule. Therefore, similar therapeutic benefit along with decreased toxicity was obtained by use of combination chemotherapy involving doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide given in the less intensive schedule.
