Localization of tandemly repeated DNA sequences in beetle chromosomes by fluorescent in situ hybridization.

In situ hybridization to chromosomes and nuclei of Tenebrio molitor shows the massive presence of a species-specific satellite DNA in all chromosomes and six sites of rDNA in mitotic chromosomes. These sites are located in two autosomal pairs and in the X and Y chromosomes. In a related species, Misolampus goudoti, in which two different families of highly repetitive DNA have been previously characterized, one family is located in centromeric regions of all chromosomes with the exception of chromosome Y, while the other repeated DNA family is present both in centromeric and distal regions of all chromosomes. rRNA genes in this species are present in a medium-sized autosomal pair only. These results show that molecular cytogenetics can be applied to coleopteran chromosomes and open the way for a physical mapping of DNA sequences in these organisms. The results also provide insights into the type of meiotic association of the X and Y chromosomes in Coleoptera and the distribution of repeated DNAs within the genome of these insects.

Morphometric study of the recurrent laryngeal nerve in young 'normal' horses.

Quantitative measurements were made on cross-sectional preparations of the distal part of the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) from nine young mixed-breed horses to establish reference values for the total number of myelinated fibres, mean fibre diameter and percentage of thickest fibres (over 9.5 microns) and to delineate diameter distribution curves. The total number of myelinated fibres, mean fibre diameter and percentage of thickest fibres for the left RLN were significantly lower than those of the right RLN (P < 0.005). The distribution of fibres was unimodal. The fibre diameter ranged from 1 micron to 17 microns. Approximately, 95 per cent of fibres had a diameter larger than 5 microns.

Characterization of the heterochromatin of the darkling beetle Misolampus goudoti: cloning of two satellite DNA families and digestion of chromosomes with restriction enzymes.

The darkling beetle Misolampus goudoti Er. has 58% of C-banded chromosome material. In this paper we deal with the study of the heterochromatin of this insect both by molecular and cytogenetical methods. Two different satellite DNA families have been characterized in Misolampus goudoti by agarose gel electrophoresis of EcoRI and PstI restriction fragments, respectively. The EcoRI family is composed of a monomeric unit of 196 bp (64.3% A-T rich) DNA sequence, representing about 120,000 copies per haploid genome. The presence of frequent intermediate-size satellite variants and an internal direct repetition of 61 bp in the EcoRI repetitive main monomer suggest that the evolution of this satellite proceeded by unequal crossing-over, occurring both within and between the 196 bp unit. Another highly repetitive sequence, defined by digestion of genomic DNA with PstI, has a more complex unit of 1.2 kb with about 70,000 copies per haploid genome. In situ digestion of M. goudoti chromosomes with restriction enzymes shows a non-specific chromosome DNA extraction from pericentromeric positions with EcoRI and chromosome specific extraction of DNA with PstI and HinfI. This is discussed in relation to the chromosomal location of both satellites.

Dermatoglyphic configurations of proximal and middle phalanges in Spaniards: analysis of subtypes.

In this paper the dermatoglyphic configurations of proximal and middle phalanges in Spaniards (112 males, 135 females) have been analyzed. The particularities of 12 types were studied in a previous paper (Pons 1985). The present one completes the study with the analysis of 29 subtypes. For each hand and sex the frequencies of subtypes on different digits are analyzed as well as the directional characteristics (radial/ulnar and distal/proximal). On proximal phalanges the digits I and II display a clear radial slant. On the contrary digits IV and V show an ulnar direction. On digit III is a bimanual asymmetry in both sexes, the right hand being slanted in a radial direction, the left hand in an ulnar. The majority of configurations are distal. There are no significant sexual differences. On middle phalanges, as usually, the variability of subtypes is greater than on proximal ones. Digit II slopes in the radial course. Digits III and IV show the bimanual asymmetry already described for the proximal phalange of digit III. Digit V displays a clear ulnar slant. In distal/proximal direction of subtypes there is a greater variability than on the proximal phalanges. No important sexual differences are observed.

Lithium as an adjuvant of iodine-131 uptake when treating patients with well-differentiated thyroid carcinoma.

Differences in the I-131 uptake by 14 metastatic lesions from well-differentiated thyroid carcinoma and 12 local remnants of normal thyroid tissue before and after an adjuvant therapy with lithium carbonate, were observed. After the adjuvant treatment and administration of an I-131 tracer dose, a considerable increase of radioiodine uptake in all metastatic lesions was found (P less than 0.001), but only a slight increase was found in 50% of the normal tissue. The response to lithium carbonate by neoplastic tissue seems to be different than that of the normal thyroid tissue, and produces a lengthening of the average I-131 biologic life that could be helpful when treating well-differentiated thyroid carcinoma.

[Emergency treatment of extensive facial burns].

This update review for postgraduate training use discusses the different problems that have to be resolved when treating extensive facial burns. Early excision-graft surgery is currently used for deep burns.

[A review on facial fractures].

It is For Teaching that the authors have done this review of the French and strange Literature about the Facial Fractures. This Study permits to join an important number of cases giving so some weight at this evaluation. However, in reason of the heterogeneity of the origins it has done seem advisable to limit this subject at the basic data.

[Acute diffuse facial cellulitis].

This is a serious sudden-onset affection with general and local manifestations due to apparently simple dental or peridental lesions. Septic inoculation from skin wounds due to injury or operation is a rare occurrence in daily practice. This complication is now fairly uncommon and no longer has the previously inexorable prognosis that was observed regularly before the availability of modern means of treatment. The latter must be instituted rapidly however, and this is not always possible under certain circumstances. The different aspects of this section of stomatologic disorders are described in this article destined for pedagogic use.

Dermatoglyphic configurations of proximal and middle phalanges in Spaniards.

In this paper the dermatoglyphic configurations of proximal and middle phalanges in Spaniards have been analysed. From the data of 112 males and 135 females it is seen that on proximal phalanges the highest frequencies correspond to basic types and enclosures. On the contrary, the middle phalanges are displaying an enlarged frequency distribution. On both phalanges no significant sexual and bimanual differences were found. The hitherto reported population data do not permit to claim clear differences among the main racial groups.

Racial aspects of the a-b ridge count on the human palm.

This paper deals with racial differences in the a-b ridge count. From the data of 75 series it is found that the Whites and Blacks are showing only little variability. In White populations the a-b ridge counts vary between 80 and 86 ridges, in Black populations (having generally lower values) between 74 and 80. The series from the Indian subcontinent are characteristic by very low values and a great variability, which ranges between 68 and 80. High values and also a great variability were observed among American Indians (80-90). The hitherto known data for Mongoloid populations from Asia are insufficient for detailed evaluations.
