[Angiographic findings in benign liver tumours (author's transl)].

Difficulties in the differential diagnosis of benign liver tumours and their differentiation from malignant liver tumours are discussed. Two patients with benign lesions were described, one with a liver cell adenoma, the other with a mixed cholangiohepato-adenoma (local nodular hyperplasia).

[Simultaneous isolation of proteins and fats from oil seeds. I. Principle of procedure].

The principle of the procedure for the simultaneous isolation of proteins and fats from oil seeds is illustrated by the isolation of these constituents from sunflower seeds. This procedure is based on the displacement of oil and the extraction of protein by an aqueous electrolyte solution after comminution of the pretreated seeds, removal of the insoluble cell components and separation of the extracts into a fat-containing and a protein-containing phase. The globulins are precipitated isoelectrically; the albumins, by using complexing agents or thermal coagulation. The liberation of the oil from the concentrated fat emulsion is achieved immediately in a mechanical way or after addition of destabilizers. The results are discussed with regard to the yields obtained and the composition of the final products.

Oncogene expression in related cancer lines differing in metastatic capacity.

Various murine tumor cell lines with different metastatic capacities were tested in vitro for oncogene expression, especially of the p21-Ha-ras protein. Small differences were seen in the expression of several distinct oncogenes in the case of a high metastatic lymphoma variant (ESb) and its low metastatic parental line (Eb). In one instance we observed a 30-fold Ha-ras gene amplification in a metastasis-derived cell line from a spontaneous mouse mammary carcinoma. In spite of this amplification we did not find an increased p21 expression in these cells.

Identification of RFamide neuropeptides in the medicinal leech.

Using a four-step reverse phase HPLC separation and RIA, five RFamide peptides were purified from CNS extracts of the leech Hirudo medicinalis. YMRFamide, FMRFamide, YLRFamide, FLRFamide, and GGKYMRFamide were identified by a combination of antiserum specificity in RIA, Edman degradation, and mass spectrometry. At least three of these five endogenous peptides can modulate neuromuscular interactions in the leech (38). FMRFamide-like immunoreactivity was selectively released from neural processes on isolated heart tubes in the presence of calcium and depolarizing levels of potassium.

African-American women who smoke crack cocaine: sexual trauma and the mother-daughter relationship.

This study evolved from previous writings that linked sexual abuse to the quality of the mother-daughter relationship. The purpose of this investigation was to examine the mother-daughter relationship among African-American women who abuse crack cocaine by comparing three different groups: women who have not experienced incest but have experienced sexual abuse; women who have experienced incest; and women who have not experienced sexual abuse. A convenience sample of 64 African-American women was used, 35 of whom were in drug abuse treatment and 29 of whom were abusing crack cocaine. Using analysis of variance studies, significant differences were found between the three groups in terms of the mother-daughter relationship. Differences were also found between the group that experienced incest and the group that experienced nonincestuous sexual abuse in terms of the amount of abuse and first age of abuse. This preliminary investigation indicates the need for further study of specific populations in this area--most notably, African-American women who abuse crack cocaine.

Surgical ligation vs. angiographic embolization of the vena spermatica: a prospective randomized study for the treatment of varicocele-related infertility.

Varicoceles as a common cause of male infertility are treated either by surgical ligation or, more recently, by angiographic occlusion of the spermatic vein. In the present prospective randomized study 38 patients were treated by surgical ligation and 33 by angiographic embolization. During the 12-month follow-up period a significant increase in sperm number (at 3 and 12 months) and sperm motility (at 12 months) occurred in both groups while sperm morphology remained unaffected. Altogether, 22 pregnancies (31%) were reported within the year following treatment, of which 11/38 (29%) occurred in the ligation group and 11/33 (33%) in the embolization group. Thus both treatment modalities appear equivalent, whereby embolization has the advantage that it can be performed on an outpatient basis.
