[Corono-radicular caries: a histoclinical approach].

Due to aging and gingival recession, the radicular structures are exposed to cariogenic attacks from the oral cavity. This phenomenon leads to a constantly higher frequency of root caries. The aspect of these carious lesions was analysed by a histological and an SEM study. To conclude the study, a clinical description of the lesions and an epidemiological survey were realized on 112 patients for 16 months.

[Aortic sarcoma. A rare pathology].

In the light of a case of endotheliosarcoma of the thoracic aorta, the authors found in the literature 33 cases of aortic sarcomas and 13 of sarcomas of peripheral arteries. The clinical diagnosis of this rare tumor is difficult. The diagnosis can be made before surgery only on the basis of angiographic and CT scan findings, whilst in most instances common arterial lesions are suspected whether of atheromatous or embolic origin. The positive diagnosis of arterial sarcoma remains histological. The diagnosis of an endothelial tumor can be made with the help of the techniques of factor VIII, antigen H and, more recently, lectins. Surgical treatment by excision and restoration of continuity has most often been used. Alone or in combination with chemo and/or radiotherapy, it would seem to be inadequate to prevent progression which involves the invasion of adjacent tissues, tumor emboli or generalized metastases. The prognosis of such a tumor remains gloomy with an average life expectancy of one year and 7 months, regardless of the histological type of arterial sarcoma.

[Primary aortoduodenal fistula of tuberculous origin].

This case of aorto-duodenal fistula was due to fistulization of a tuberculous lymph node between an atheromatous aneurysm of the infra-renal aorta and the third part of the duodenum. CAT scan provided the diagnosis of an aorto-duodenal fistula. The tuberculous origin of the fistula was confirmed by bacteriological and histological examinations. The outcome was favourable after revascularisation "in situ" combined with epiplooplasty and prolonged antituberculous drug therapy.

[Serological analysis of coagulase-negative staphylococci: study of characteristic agglutinogens in type strains of the nine species individualized by Schleifer and Kloos (author's transl)].

The occurrence of characteristic agglutinogens has been searched for in the type strains of the following species: Staphylococcus xylosus, S. cohnii, S. epidermidis, S. capitis, S. saprophyticus, S. warneri, S. haemolyticus, S. hominis and S. simulans. Serotyping of these nine strains and study of their antisera have been carried out with formalin-treated and autoclaved bacteria. It has been shown that the characteristic agglutinogens of S. epidermidis and S. haemolyticus were respectively identical to the agglutinogens previously described in the coagulase-negative type strain 52.186 and in the S. aureus type strain 18. Characteristic agglutinogens have been found in each of the other seven type strains. Agglutinogens found in S. xylosus and S. saprophyticus are thermolabile, the corresponding absorbed sera reacting only with the formalin-treated homologous strain. Concerning S. cohnii, S. capitis, S. hominis and S. simulans, their absorbed sera reacting both with formalin-treated and autoclaved homologous strains, the observed reactions can be accounted either by one thermostable agglutinogen or by two characteristic agglutinogens, one thermostable, the other thermolabile. In S. warneri, only one thermostable agglutinogen has been characterized, the specificity of the reaction observed between the absorbed S. warneri antiserum and the homologous formalin-treated strain having to be confirmed. The use for serotyping of absorbed sera prepared against the type strains of the species S. xylosus, S. cohnii, S. capitis, S. saprophyticus, S. warneri, S. hominis and S. simulans should permit to improve the individualization of coagulase-negative staphylococci.

Plasmid DNA content of multiresistant Staphylococcus aureus strains.

Multiresistant S. aureus strains (also called methicillin-resistant in clinical laboratories) share many common properties. In addition to the commonly used epidemiological markers (pattern of resistance to antibiotics and metal ions, serotype and lysotype), we considered using the molecular and genetical properties of the plasmid DNA harboured by these strains. In this paper we report an epidemiological study of two groups of S. aureus strains sampled since 1975 and carrying new resistance characters which appeared with increasing frequency in France. The Tm-SgR strains (5 strains) carry, in addition to 13 resistance characters commonly observed, two new characters: the resistance to gramin components A and B (Sg). The two new characters were shown to be encoded by a single plasmid. Amongst the 5 strains studied, two harbour a similar plasmid DNA content while the three others were clearly distinct. Because of the variability of the plasmid DNA content observed in these strains, the similarity of this content observed between two of them suggest a close phylogenic relationship. These two strains are probably derivatives from a single clone. The spread of the two new characters amongst the distinct strains might be related to the spread of ancestrally related Tm-Sg plasmids. The Tob-GenR strains (16 strains) carry, in addition to 12 wide-spread resistance markers, the newly observed resistance to many aminoglycosides, mainly the resistance to tobramycin (Tob) and gentamicin (Gen). They all harbour a 22-kb plasmid DNA generating similar restriction cleavage patterns and conferring the resistance to penicillin G, arsenate, arsenite and cadmium. Some of them harbour one or two extra small plasmids (3.4 and 2.3 kb); the presence of these two plasmids was not associated with a modification of the resistance pattern of the strains. Most of the resistance characters--including the new ones--are probably encoded by chromosomal genes. In this epidemiological situation, the spread of the new aminoglycoside resistance characters carried by the 16 strains having the same phenotype and harbouring the same 22-kb plasmid is attributed to the spread of derivatives from a single clone.

[Isotopic phlebography for control of venous surgery of the lower limb].

Isotopic phlebography with microspheres containing 99 mTc aggregated human albumin is a simple and easily reproducible means of controlling the results of venous surgery of the lower limb and ilio-caval confluent. A comparison in 34 cases with the results obtained by conventional contrast phlebography showed close correlation between the two methods. However, since the images are not as sharp as with contrast phlebography, isotopic phlebography cannot be used for planning procedures prior to reconstructive venous surgery and should be reserved to post-operative control.
