The Effect of Natural Mulches on Crop Performance, Weed Suppression and Biochemical Constituents of Catnip and St. John's Wort.

Because of expanding markets for high-value niche crops, opportunities have increased for the production of medicinal herbs in the USA. An experiment was conducted in 2001 and 2002 near Gilbert, IA, to study crop performance, weed suppression, and environmental conditions associated with the use of several organic mulches in the production of two herbs, catnip (Nepeta cataria L.) and St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum L. 'Helos'). Treatments were arranged in a completely randomized design and included a positive (hand-weeded) control, a negative (nonweeded) control, oat straw, a flax straw mat, and a nonwoven wool mat. Catnip plant height was significantly greater in the oat straw than the other treatments at 4 wk through 6 wk in 2001; at 4 to 8 wk in 2002, catnip plant height and width was significantly lower in the negative control compared with the other treatments. Catnip yield was significantly higher in the flax straw mat than all other treatments in 2001. In 2002, St. John's wort yields were not statistically different in any treatments. All weed management treatments had significantly fewer weeds than the non-weeded rows in 2002. Total weed density comparisons in each crop from 2 yr showed fewer weeds present in the flax straw and wool mat treatments compared with positive control plots. There was no significant weed management treatment effect on the concentration of the target compounds, nepetalactone in catnip and pseudohypericin-hypericin in St. John's wort, although there was a trend toward higher concentrations in the flax straw treatment.

Patella resurfacing in total knee arthroplasty using metal-backed rotating bearing components: a 2- to 10-year follow-up evaluation.

Management of the patella in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) has become an important issue. Patella-related complications remain a major concern and have frequently been the reason for secondary intervention, whether resurfaced or not. Common modes of failures are increased polyethylene (PE) wear, PE fractures, component dissociation (loosening or PE spinout), and patella fractures. This study evaluated 235 cases of low contact stress (LCS) TKA using a metal-backed rotating PE bearing. The setting was a large joint replacement center which has performed more than 2750 cases of LCS TKA since 1988. Cases with a follow-up shorter than 2 years were not calculated for statistical analysis but were included in postoperative complications. The mean follow-up was 4.2 years (range 2-10 years). Of the 105 cases 94.7% scored excellent or good results on a modified 100-point Hospital for Special Surgery score. Patellofemoral tracking was analyzed on axial radiographs in all cases and revealed perfect tracking in 96%. Revision surgery related to patella complications was required in 7 of 235 cases (3%), including two of PE bearing spinout and one each of infection, patella necrosis, PE break-age, patella maltracking, and traumatic patella component loosening. Four patella complications (1.7%) were related to patellofemoral maltracking, excluding the infected, traumatic, and patella necrosis cases. These results are similar to or better than those reported in the literature and complications appear to occur more frequently in cases with non-ideal patellofemoral maltracking.

Phenanthrenequinone antiretroviral agents.

Compounds 3 and 5 are the first phenanthrenequinones to exhibit significant virucidal activity against the retrovirus equine infectious anemia virus. They differ from hypericin in that their virucidal activity is not light dependent.

Correctional mental health.

This article describes a prison program for mentally ill felons. It depicts the program's similarities to and differences from more traditional mental health programs. The unique qualities of the program are detailed, and possible future directions are considered.

Trypanosomes in Cervidae in Germany.

Trypanosoma cervi Kingston et Morton, 1975 was demonstrated in 2 fallow deer (Dama dama) in 1976, and in 10 roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) and one red deer (Cervus elaphus) in spring 1983. The infected deer originated from the vicinity of Hannover, Germany.

Metropolitan jail psychiatric clinic: a year's experience.

The behavioral, demographic and psychiatric characteristics of 524 inmates examined over a one year period in a metropolitan jail psychiatric treatment clinic are described. The psychiatric problems were sufficiently acute that over one-third of all patients were examined and treated within 24 hours of booking. Two psychiatric syndrome and intervention profiles emerged. The most commonly seen were misdemeanants, with psychotic illnesses who required long term antipsychotic medications and close contact with community treatment resources. Situational reactions with suicidal ideation in patients with character disorder diagnoses were seen less frequently. They were treated with short term anti-anxiety medications and environmental manipulation.

Hyperactivity: diagnostic confusion.

Histories of hyperactive symptoms were evaluated for two samples of young men and women under treatment for drug or psychiatric disorders. More than one in five had shown hyperactivity but almost all of these developed pictures of other psychiatric problems, frequently the antisocial personality, by late adolescence. This picture is felt to reflect inaccurate use of hyperactive labels in difficult-to-handle children. The potential consequences of these practices are discussed.

Rate of psychiatric morbidity in a metropolitan county jail population.

The author describes social-psychiatric characteristics of 122 jail inmates examined while awaiting trail, 80% of them on felony charges. The estimated overall rate of psychiatric illness was 4.6%. The patient sample was significantly older and contained significantly more minority group men than the jail population as a whole. Thirty-six percent of the patients diagnosed as schizophrenic were arrested on misdemeanor charges. Drug dependency was diagnosed in 51% of the men but in only 15% of the women. Psychosis was diagnosed more frequently and alcoholism, anxiety neurosis, and antisocial personality less frequently than in studies of prison populations using similar diagnostic criteria.

Psychiatric treatment in jail: an experiment in health-care delivery.

The author discusses the source of referral, psychiatric diagnosis, and treatment of 539 inmates who were referred for psychiatric treatment in two metropolitan jails. Almost one-third of the patients were evaluated within 24 hours of their being booked into jail. Manifestly disordered and violent behavior accounted for 50 per cent of the referrals; almost half the patients were diagnosed as schizophrenic or manic. The author emphasizes the importance of a close working relationship with the custody staff to facilitate identifying inmates who need psychiatric treatment.
