[Influence of lithium on magnesium levels in the plasma, erythrocytes and brain of rats].

Intra peritoneal administration of LiCl to rat with a single dose or every day during a week shows that the correlation of brain Li with erythrocytes Li is better than the same correlation with plasmatic Li. With a single dose of Li the variation of the Li level doesn't give significant variations of Mg. With repetitive administrations of Li (near that which occurs in actual therapeutic treatment) we show (44 pairs of results with p less than 0.001) that the increase of Li in erythrocytes is correlated with a decrease of Mg in erythrocytes and an increase of this ion in plasma. The authors demonstrate that the nervous cells don't release Mg when Li get in the brain.

Synthesis and assembly of wall polymers on regenerating yeast protoplasts.

Accumulation of chitin and glucan on S. cerevisiae and C. albicans protoplasts begins shortly after resuspension in the regeneration medium, and mannoprotein molecules also appear retained by the regenerating wall after 30-60 minutes in S. cerevisiae or after a longer lag period in C. albicans. Nevertheless, a considerable fraction of the synthesized mannoproteins, which in SDS-acrylamide gels exhibit a different pattern from that of wall manno-proteins of cells, are still released to the growth medium during at least eight hours. De novo synthesis of chitin synthase, but not of glucan synthase, is observed in S. cerevisiae from about 30 minutes after initiation of the regeneration process. The interaction between microfibrils of nascent chitin formed by C. albicans protoplasts is altered by strains as Calcofluor White or Congo Red. In the presence of the former one, no microcrystalline lattice of the polymer is formed and protoplasts do not regenerate correctly.

Assessment of the predictive value of X-ray pelvimetry and biparietal diameter in cephalopelvic disproportion.

The value of X-ray pelvimetry and ultrasonic measurement of the biparietal diameter for trial of labor prognosis was assessed in 172 healthy primiparas with suspected cephalopelvic disproportion. A decision diagram which is able to correctly predict 50% of the cesarean sections without increasing the number of unnecessary cesarean sections is proposed. In addition, the study confirms the superfluity of X-ray pelvimetry in cases of high station of the fetal head at the end of pregnancy.

Turnover of protein components of the plasma membrane of Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

The peptide composition of plasma membrane in Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells growing at different temperatures between 18 and 38 degrees C was studied using SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Stability of the proteins, both qualitative and quantitative, was observed at the tested temperatures. Treatment for 2 h with cycloheximide decreased by about 50% the amount of a 80 kDa membrane peptide at 18, 23, 28 and 33 degrees C, with no other apparent effects. At 38 degrees C the 80 kDa peptide was not affected by the presence of the drug. Addition of tunicamycin to cultures at concentrations partially inhibitory to growth caused a large accumulation of the 80 kDa peptide in the plasma membrane, which cycloheximide did not modify. Pulse-chase experiments indicated a low rate of turnover of total plasma membranes in cells growing at 18 and 28 degrees C. In contrast, at 38 degrees C about 50% of the radioactivity in plasma membranes disappeared after a 2 h chase. The 80 kDa protein band was the only one with significant differential decay.

Motor activity after colon replacement of esophagus. Manometric evaluation.

Motor activity of the colon transplant for esophageal reconstruction is a point of controversy. In this paper we present manometric studies carried out in 15 patients subjected to isoperistaltic colon interposition. Manometric studies were carried out with two polyvinyl water-filled catheters inserted through pressure transducers. Basal colonic activity and motor activity following several stimuli and "dry swallows" were registered. The type of waves after stimuli were classified as (1) synchronous, (2) sequential or progressive, and (3) segmental. Details of the basal colonic waves and colon contractions after stimuli are given: i.e., rate, duration, amplitude, interval from the stimulus, and percentage of motor activity. The data reported here indicate the good motor response of the isoperistaltic colon to intraluminal injection of water or 0. 1 N hydrochloric acid and to chachet swallowing. Only two free-symptoms patients did not have motor activity. One of them was submitted to manometric studies too soon after the operation. We conclude that the presence of sequential waves in the interposed segment likely can help to propel the contents of the colon into the stomach and to clear gastric juice if reflux from the stomach should occur.

Total sternectomy for malignant disease.

From 1972 to 1978, six total sternectomies for malignant disease of the sternum were carried out. The clinical data are summarized and the surgical technique is described. After sternectomy, the area of chest wall resection was repaired by suturing a sheet of silicone rubber to the edges of the defect and chest wall stability was assured by using one or two stainless steel struts. Finally the defect was covered with methylmethacrylate prepared and applied inthe operative field. The prosthetic material was shaped until curing by polymerization was complete. We discuss the advantages of this type of reconstruction, the technical details, the use of antibiotics, the surgical drainage, and the need for biopsy prior to carrying out a total sternectomy.

[Antenatal assessment of gestational age (author's transl)].

Antenatal assessment of fetal gestational age has been performed by amniotic fluid analyses and ultrasonography. Average estimation of amniotic fluid creatinine and glucose, Clements' test and biparietal diameter measurements produce an accurate assessment of gestational age in 80 % of normal or pathological cases. When amniocentesis is performed to estimate fetal lung maturity, this assessment of gestational age can improve obstetrical care.

[Results of surgery in bullous emphysema (author's transl)].

The authors report a series of 20 patients with single (8) or multiple (12) bullae. In most cases, exeresis of these bullae favorably affected functional signs. Standard spirometry (FEV1, VC) was improved significantly in long-term studies.

Results of surgical therapy for lung carcinoma.

A series of 300 pulmonary resections in patients with lung carcinoma is presented. Total survival rate of the series since the operation, including surgical mortality, was 33% at 3 years and 24% at 5 years. The survival rate and surgical criteria were correlated, having better results when standard surgery was performed. The authors emphasize that the surgical figures of the series are of great value as the surgical indications were large and nonselective, with 85% of resectability in the thoracotomies.

Thoracoscopy in the diagnosis of pleural effusion.

The technique, indications, and complications of diagnostic thoracoscopy are described. Two hundred and eight explorations have been performed in our service in the last seven years. From 137 pleural malignancies we have obtained an unequivocal positive biopsy in 129 (94%) with a minimum number of complications and no mortality. From our experience we conclude that thoracoscopy, when porperly performed, is diagnostic in most pleural conditions.
