[Disorders of the cerebral function in patients in a dialysis-transplantation program].

36 patients of a dialysis-transplantation program with well functioning cadaver kidneys were investigated psychometrically for organic losses in intellectual function. 50% of the patients showed organicity an average of 16 months after transplantation. These organic deficits were found significantly more often when dialysis treatment had been complicated by marked medical problems. It is concluded that early transplantation of well dialyzed, medically fit patients will contribute to preventing persistent organic brain syndromes.

[Changes in male sexual function during hemodialysis and after renal transplantation under psychiatric aspects (author's transl)].

20 patients with well functioning kidneys were investigated psychiatrically and had to judge on their libido and potency prior to the onset of their illness under chronic hemodialysis and after transplantation. The psychometric instrument used was the FPI (Freiburger Persönlichkeits-Inventar). The sexual activity was found to be either significantly reduced or absent in 80% during hemodialysis. Following transplantation more than 50% sexually fully recovered. In patients with persistent sexual dysfunction in the post-transplant period depressive symptoms were found four times as much as in those with a complete recovery. Psychometrically the latter characterized themselves as more active, optimistic but even as less self-critical. Therapeutic aspects are being discussed.

Depression↗

[A comparison of the tranquilizing effect of fluspirilene and diazepam (author's transl)].

Over a period of 8 weeks we compared the tranquilizing effects of the longterm neuroleptic Fluspirilene to those of Diazepam in a series of 28 patients. Both drugs showed good effects on somatization, anxiety and depressive mood. Fluspirilene, however, proved to be the more mood elevating and more activating agent without being hypnotic. The indications for both drugs are being discussed emphazising the new therapeutic perspectives of a long acting tranquilizer.

Anxiety↗

[Long-term tranquilizers - an alternative in medical practice (author's transl)].

Over a period of 7 to 12 weeks we studied 3 series of 274 patients with depressive and somatic complaints treated with the long-acting neuroleptic fluspirilene in a dosage of 1-1.5 mg weekly. By means of various rating scales it was compared to diazepam in regard to its tranquilizing effects. Fluspirilene showed good activating and antidepressive qualities, which were superior to those of diazepam, whereas somatic complaints responded equally well to both drugs. The indications for a long-acting tranquilizer with the advantage of a controllable application are being discussed.

Clinical Trials as Topic↗

A comparison of two types of acute carbon monoxide poisoning.

In 47 patients treated at the Toxicological Clinic in Krakow for coal stove-gas poisoning, the aspartate aminotransferase, lactate dehydrogenase, LDH1 isoenzyme activities, and the lactate level were studied. Findings were compared with those of earlier investigations carried out on a group of patients poisoned by lighting gas; qualitatively changes in both groups were similar. The biochemical parameters studied aided in quantitative evaluation of the patients' condition: a threefold increase in lactate level on admission to the hospital and a likewise threefold increase in aspartate aminotransferase activity after 24 hrs of treatment are indications of severe poisoning.
