The ability of adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) to induce lung maturation was evaluated in fetal lambs. One member of 14 twin pairs between 114 and 138 days of gestation was infused intravenously with 0.5 mg ACTH over 5 days. The lungs of treated versus control lambs were judged more mature by morphologic criteria by the use of light and electron microscopy and by biochemical criteria by the use of lamellar-body-rich cell fractions. None of 5 premature lambs treated with ACTH and allowed to breathe showed evidence of hyaline membrane disease, while 3 untreated control lambs showed typical hyaline membranes.
The ability of most anticoagulants (except heparin) to cross the placenta and the consequent hemorrhage in the fetus has been recognized for some time (3). A teratogenic effect specifically attributed to warfarin sodium is a more recent finding (7, 9, 10). The following is a case report of a newborn with clinical and roentgenographic features similar to the cases reported previously.

A systematic study has been undertaken to improve the understanding of water regulation in premature babies who are artificially ventilated. Thirty nine premature babies, 16 normal (Group N, GA 31.4 weeks, B/W 1622 g) and 23 with respiratory distress syndrome who were ventilated with or without continuous positive pressure (Group V, GA 31 weeks, BW 1505 g) have been studied. Plasma osmolalities were the same in both groups (284 and 282 mosM/Kg H2O) but there were significant differences (p less than 0.001) between the urine osmolalities N = 150.6 +/- 19.6 V = 294 +/- 25.9 mosM/Kg H2O) and the plasma ADH levels of the two groups (N = 2.9 +/- 0.4 pg/ml, V = 12.2 +/- 2.4 pg/ml). There was a significant correlation between the urine osmolality and the plasma ADH level but not between plasma osmolality and the plasma ADH level. Several hypotheses can be proposed but none are satisfactory.

Immunoassayable plasma renin activity (PRA) was measured in 16 healthy preterm infants of different gestational ages. A total of 52 measurements have been performed between the second week of life and the date of the expected term. PRA was found markedly increased in preterm infants and a highly significative negative correlation with postmenstrual age was proved.
In order to determine if phototherapy was influencing any change in plasma gonadotropin levels, we have compared a group of 8 premature infants (4 males and 4 females) who have been treated with phototherapy because of jaundice, to a control group of 6 premature infants who did not require phototherapy. During the third and fourth week of life, luteinizing hormone (LH) and folicule stimulating hormone (FSH), increased simultaneously in a significant range in phototherapy treated females. In the group of treated males, LH but not FSH increased significantly. Constant phototherapy and/or the sudden stopping of the treatment in the jaundiced premature newborn female is responsible for a marked and transient elevation of gonadotropins. A clear mechanism of the observed phenomenon with pathways including the retina, pineal gland and hypothalamus, is not apparent.
