[Improvement of the tolerance of prolonged catheterization of radial artery].

The incidence of thrombosis of the radial artery after long-term cannulation was evaluated in 84 patients randomly divided into two matched groups: polyethylene catheters were used in group A for a mean period of 9 +/- 1 days, and teflon catheters were used in group B for a mean period of 11 +/- 1 days. Thrombosis was diagnosed by bedside arteriography. Its incidence was 79% in group A and 9% only in group B. (p less than 0.001). It is concluded that the safety of radial artery cannulation is increased by using short teflon catheters.

[Brief self-evaluation questionnaire for depressive, asthenic and anxious dimensions].

A short self-rating inventory of 24 items is presented. Factor analysis has shown that it includes three homogenous sub-scales of 8 items each, measuring respectively the depressive mood, the asthenia-fatigue and the anxiety dimensions. The inventory can be used in general practice with ambulatory patient and allows to select for specific therapeutic trials a sub-group of patients characterized by depressive and asthenic symptoms with a relatively low level of anxiety.

Comparison of nitrazepam and zopiclone in psychiatric patients.

This investigation compares the effects of single and double doses of nitrazepam (5 and 10 mg) and zopiclone (7.5 and 15 mg) and placebo for 1 night in 40 psychiatric patients. The results indicate that zopiclone is an active hypnotic compound, comparable in its effects to those of nitrazepam, the higher dosage being best adapted to the type of patients included in the study.

[Neonatal hypocalcemia in 2 twins revealing maternal hyperparathyroidism. A review of the literature].

The authors report the case of dizygotic twins suffering from transitory neonatal hypoparathyroidy and leading to the diagnosis of maternal hyperparathyroidy. The differences of clinical and biological symptomatology between these twins suggest individual variations in response to phosphocalcic disorders of the mother. A review of literature find 31 other cases. This study emphasize the aggravation by the mild hypomagnesemia frequently associated, the usual severity of initial clinical symptomatology in contrast with a good neurologic outcome, the diagnosis of maternal hyperparathyroidy.

Telolysomes in cultured iris epithelial cells and in the TVI cell-line.

Iris epithelial cells of adult newts, which are fully differntiated melanocytes and non-dividing, become dedifferentiated and converted into lens cells when put in culture. A recent study shows that this dedifferentiation is based on an autophagic process which is associated with proliferation and mainly affects melanosomes. The present report shows that in primary culture of iris epithelial cells after the majority of melanosomes have disappeared, myelinoid bodies, which are interpreted to be telolysosomes of autophagic nature, appear in high frequencies. This suggest that in these cells autophagy persists after the loss of melanosomes. A possible connection of this type of autophagy with the differentation of lens fiber which occurs in this culture is discussed. In the TVI cell line which is believed to be derived from the same cell type, but devoid of melanosomes, similar myelinoid bodies are a characteristic cell component, suggesting that the tendency for autophagy is inherited in theis cell line.

Autophagy in dedifferentiating newt iris epithelial cells in vitro.

The ultrastructure of dedifferentiating iris epithelial cells of adult newts was studied in vitro, under the conditions which allow subsequent conversion into lens cells. The dense population of melanosomes which characterize the normal differentiated cells are progressively lost before the cells convert into lens cells. The loss of melanosomes is accompanied by the appearance of a layer of material of intermediate density surrounding the melanosomes. Subsequently vacuoles of various sizes appear in which melanosomes, ribosomes, and multivesicular bodies are sequestered. Further observations suggest that these affected organelles are destined for exocytosis. The cytochemical test for acid phosphatase is positive in the immediate vicinity of melanosomes, in the melanosome clusters, and in the multivesicular bodies. On the other hand, normal iris epithelial cells in situ are negative to the acid phosphatase test. The results are interpreted to indicate that autophagy and exocytosis of melanosomes and other organelles occur during the dedifferentiation of iris epithelial cells.

[Concepts of inhibition in psychiatry].

Following a historical approach, the authors first describe the original development of the concept of inhibition in neurophysiology and then analyze the subsequent adaptations made in psychiatry around such concept including those of: -- Pavlov, Hull, Watson and the behaviorists, -- Freud and the Freudian School, -- clinicians and psychopharmacologists. The concept of inhibition has thus various meanings in psychiatry. Although some unity is achieved on the semiological level, this aspect cannot explain the extent of the process.

[Effects of clonazepam taken per os by children with rebellious epileptic encephalopathies].

The effect of clonazepam, taken per-os and in very progressive doses, has been studied by the authors on fourteen children afflicted with evolutive epileptic encephalopathies and still presenting, in spite of heavy anti-epileptic polychemio-therapies, alarming clinical and electrical manifestations. Clonazepam proved to be an efficient contributive factor in the course of a curing process since, in 70% of the cases, it produced quite a visible amelioration. Its efficient action seems to last longer than that of other diazepines since half of their patients have now been treated with it for more than a year with, as a result, a constant clinical and electrical amelioration. As a last point, it appears to be a very useful drug when dealing with type of rebellious epilepsies since, when combined with other benzodiazepines, seldom side-effects and no "crossed resistances" can be observed.
