[Treatment of malignant tumors of the conjunctiva with strontium-90 (author's transl)].

Although there are relatively few cases in our series of tumor of the conjunctiva, they represent most frequent histopathologic varieties for this localization. It is difficult to treat these patients in such a way as to cure the tumor while preserving intact the eye and vision. Surgery is recommended only in well differentiated cases that are diagnosed early. The excellent physical properties of strontium-90 make it particularly useful for this type of localization. High doses of radiation can be applied to the tumors with little danger to the deep and sensitive structures of the eye. With fractional doses we have been able to control conjunctival tumors of considerable size and thickness which would not normally have been considered tributary to this type of therapy.

Changes in the pituitary metabolism of monoamines (dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin) in female and male rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) during gonadal recrudescence.

The dynamics of the levels and metabolism of dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin were studied in pituitaries of male and female rainbow trout at different stages of gonadal development. In female rainbow trout, the turnover of dopamine (calculated using the inhibitor of tyrosine hydroxylase alpha-methyl-p-tyrosine methyl-ester HCl), serotonin metabolism, and norepinephrine levels decreased in the advanced stage of exogenous vitellogenesis with respect to the initial stage. However, data obtained in males did not show changes in either serotonergic or noradrenergic metabolism during the last stages of gonadal development. However, an increase of dopaminergic turnover was noticed in the male fish at the end of spermiation. Finally, pituitary dopaminergic activity was significantly higher in immature (prepubescent stage) than in adult fish.

[Factors associated to non-attendance to psychiatric first visit].

INTRODUCTION: The failure to the first regular appointments in Mental Health Centres represent a problem in economic terms for the institution, a waste of time for the professional person and an increase in the waiting list in the centre with the subsequent prejudice for the patient. METHODOLOGY: In this investigation we study the influence of some sociodemographic (sex and age) and referral variables (geographic area, previous contact in the centre, referral reason and diagnostic by the family physician) in a group of 235 failing subjects compared with a group of 300 attending subjects. RESULTS: Results show that there's no relationship between the variables in terms of sex or age; that there are differences related to the geographic area from where they are referred and that the patients with a previous contact in the centre (more than one year) fail less than those who never attended.

Juxtapapillary duodenal diverticula and diverticula of the colon: is there a general "gastrointestinal diverticular disease"?

Both juxtapapillary duodenal diverticula and colon diverticula are acquired lesions, the pathogenesis of which is believed to involve the influence of high intraluminal pressure on loci minoris resistentiae in the gastrointestinal wall. We wanted to investigate whether juxtapapillary duodenal diverticula and colon diverticula occur independently, or whether they are part of a hypothetical general "gastrointestinal diverticular disease". 239 patients with juxtapapillary duodenal diverticula were identified in 2231 patients undergoing ERCP. Complete radiology data were available in 119/239 patients. Double contrast barium enema had been performed in 28/119 patients. In these patients, colon diverticula were present in 9/20 women and 1/8 men. The frequency of colon diverticula in these patients was compared with randomly chosen age- and sex-matched controls, for whom barium enema results were available. In these controls, 9/20 women and 1/8 men also had colon diverticula (n.s.). We conclude that after stratification for age and sex, the occurrence of colon diverticula is not higher in patients with juxtapapillary duodenal diverticula than in the general population. Juxtapapillary duodenal diverticula and colon diverticula thus occur independently. These data are not in favor of the existence of a general gastrointestinal diverticular disease.

[The Fuenlabrada's study: tobacco as cardiovascular risk factor in children and adolescents].

Smoking habits were studied in 1,274 healthy adolescents of both sexes, aged 10 to 18 years, of Fuenlabrada, Madrid. It was known by personal interview. 30% of the population were smokers. Smoking habits increased with age up to 18 years when 63% of males and 53% of females were smokers. Smoking prevalence was significantly higher among males than in females. Males and females smokers had significantly lower levels of C-HDL and higher levels of C-LDL/C-HDL ratio than non smokers. No differences were observed for anthropometric variables, body mass index, blood pressure, skin-fold thickness, total cholesterol, glucemia and uric acid. The implications of these findings are of concern in light of the apparently protective role of C-HDL in coronary heart disease. These findings provide valuable information to the promotion of antismoking campaigns in adolescent age.

Juxtapapillary duodenal diverticula: association with biliary stone disease.

In order to explore the relationship between duodenal diverticula and biliary stone disease, we reviewed 2231 endoscopic retrograde cholangio-pancreatography procedures. We found at least one juxtapapillary diverticulum per 239 patients (10.8%). The occurrence of duodenal diverticula increases with age. Patients with duodenal diverticula were older, had more gallbladder stones, more common bile duct stones, had undergone cholecystectomy more frequently, and experienced more frequently common bile duct stone recurrence after cholecystectomy. We thus confirm an association between the presence of diverticula of the second part of the duodenum, and biliary stone pathology, including gallbladder stones, common bile duct stones, and recurrent stones after cholecystectomy. We discuss the aetiopathogeny of this affection.

[The Fuenlabrada study: lipids and lipoproteins in children and adolescents].

Lipids and lipoproteins were studied in 2,153 healthy children, of both sexes, aged 0 to 18 years old, of Fuenlabrada, Madrid, population. We determined: Total Cholesterol (TC) and Triglycerides (TG) by automatized enzymatic techniques. C-HDL by precipitation method. C-LDL and C-VLDL were calculated by Friedewald-Fredrickson equation. Our laboratory have previously standardized the techniques of obtention of TC, TG and C-HDL using serums of reference. Mean values were: TC = 166 +/- 36 mg/dl, TG = 63 +/- 39 mg/dl, C-HDL = 53 +/- 13 mg/dl, C-LDL = 102 +/- 34 mg/dl, C-VLDL = 13 +/- 6 mg/dl. In our population 14% had TC greater than or equal to 200 mg/dl, 2.6% TG greater than or equal to 140 mg/dl and 15% C-HDL less than or equal to 40 mg/dl. During adolescence a significant change in the lipid and lipoprotein pattern in both sexes was observed. At the end of the adolescence, males had C-HDL lower and TG, C-LDL and C-VLDL higher than females. Correlations and associations of lipids and lipoproteins were similar in our population than in adult population. The mean finding of this study is the actual high level of TC in our children population.
