Effect of realimentation after several days' isolated glucose or fructose intake on DNA synthesis in rat liver.

Marked stimulation of liver DNA synthesis was observed in rats given an isolated glucose or fructose diet for 4 days and theen refed one day on diets with different protein contents. The strongest stimulatn effect was found in rats refed, after an isolated glucose intake, with a high protein diet (81 cal%). The stimulant effect of refeeding on liver DNA synthesis was far less pronounced in rats subjected to several days' starvation before realimentation than in rats given a carbohydrate diet. The stimulant effect of realimentation after an isolated glucose intake was distinctly enhanced if triiodothyronine (50 microgram/100 g b.w., i.g.) was administered just before the change to a high protein diet. The increase in liver DNA synthesis in rats fed three days on fructose before undergoing partial hepatectomy was the same as in the controls. In rats given glucose prior to partial hepatectomy, the post-operative increase in DNA synthesis was partly inhibited.

Animal Nutritional Physiological Phenomena↗

[Caloric substitution in the septic phase of burn disease (author's transl)].

Energy turnover of septic burned patients was favourably influenced by infusion of glucose 40% one unit of Insulin for each 3 grams of glucose along with 0.5% protein preparate and 50-100 grams of aminoacids, administered by way of a cave cathether. The burned patients treated according to this protocol need less amount of blood, apart from the protein sparing effect, as it may be deduced from the studies on forty severely burned patients.

Burns↗

[Surgical view of the treatment of hand burns (author's transl)].

In the primary and early operative treatment of deep burns of the hand necrectomy is the main point. Grafting of skin is urgent, too, but it is secondary to necrectomy. The hazard to the deep structures on the hand make a primary flap plasty necessary. However, if it is about a relative indication or the personal and material conditions are missing, a temporary skin replacement (biological bandage) is appropriate.

Burns↗

[Gallstone ileus (author's transl)].

During the past 30 years 63 patients with gallstone ileus underwent surgical treatment. The mortality rate decreased from 54,5% to 27%, it is mainly caused by the advanced age of the patients and difficulties with early diagnosis. A subsequent cholecystectomy is to be considered cautiously depending on the patient's age.
