Circadian rhythm of hepatocellular structures in rats dosed phenobarbital.

The circadian rhythm of liver weight and hepatic structures was studied in rats given a maximum tolerated dose of 70 or 80 mg/kg/day Phenobarbital during 7 days and killed at four different hours of the following day. The drug-induced increase in liver weight in % of body weight of rats was about 1% in the morning and in the afternoon in comparison with controls. At 6.00--7.00 during the glycogen maximum, the fine structure of hepatocytes was normal except enlargement and glycogen depletion of cells in the near neighbourhood of central veins. From 9.00--10.00 the mitotic activity was markidly increased and parallel to the progressive disappearance of glycogen the smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER) became prominent. Hypertrophy of SER was fully developed at 15.00--16.00 and 17.00--18.00.

Computed tomography in the evaluation of hepatocellular carcinoma.

Computed tomography (CT) was used to evaluate 47 cases of hepatocellular carcinoma: it was definite in 37, equivocal in 5 and negative in 5 cases. No specific patterns of CT images were recognized. Pre- and postcontrast scans were necessary because several tumors could only be detected on one or the other scan. CT may reveal the exact extent of tumor and show additional tumors in case of multiple lesions. However, false negative results are possible in isodense or very small tumors.

67Ga-citrate scanning in hypernephroma.

67Ga scanning was performed in 26 patients with hypernephroma (17 with only a primary lesion of hypernephroma, 4 with both primary and metastatic lesions, 2 with hypernephroma and pyelonephritis, and 3 with only a metastatic lesion after nephrectomy). In patients with primary lesions alone, the positive finding rate by 67Ga scanning was low (26%), and in metastatic lesions that by scanning was high (86%). The practical conclusions are as follows: 67Ga scanning is of littel use as a diagnostic aid in primary lesion of hypernephroma, but may be useful in case with metastases with inflammatory disease.
