Use of Giger and Davidhizar's Transcultural Assessment Model by health professions.

Nursing science is increasingly gaining recognition. Witness the growing use by other disciplines of nursing's models and ideas. One example is the adoption of the Giger and Davidhizar Model of Transcultural Assessment by non-nursing disciplines to understand and address the needs of a pluralistic multicultural society. Below the authors describe a model to understand culturally diverse clients and show how health professions are using it to provide culturally competent care.

Cultural Diversity↗

Educating the culturally diverse healthcare student.

Diversity among healthcare students is increasing as the population of the United States changes in composition. Preparation of the culturally diverse healthcare student presents a challenge for recruitment, education, and retention. The problems of education can be ameliorated by a thorough assessment of the culturally diverse student using the Giger and Davidhizar model. The student should be assessed for differences by considering six interrelated factors: communication, space, time, social organization, environmental control, and biological variations. Understanding the differences that exist in these areas is a first step toward appreciating the diversity among people of varied cultures.

Transcultural patient assessment: a method of advancing dental care.

It is essential for persons who work in a dental office to understand the differences in individuals from culture to culture. It is also important to appreciate that each patient and family is culturally unique and brings this uniqueness to the dental office. Since the caregivers also bring their own unique cultural heritage, the dental office setting is rich with possible variations and differences. It is important to refrain from imposing personal values and beliefs on the patient and to respect the uniqueness and differences each brings to the care environment.

Communication↗

Culture and space.

Transcultural nursing assessment: a method for advancing nursing practice.

Today a new generation of nurses with different cultural insights and a deeper appreciation of human life and values are developing a sensitivity for culturally appropriate individualized care. Although literature on clinical approaches in cultural diverse situations is mushrooming, relatively few theories on transcultural nursing provide a systematic method for comprehensive nursing assessment, which is necessary for both the nursing practitioner and the researcher to provide appropriate nursing care tailored for each client. Below an outline of the areas that need to be assessed when working with clients from multicultural populations.

So you've been offered a management position.

As the demand for nurses opens management positions not previously available, nurses are increasingly facing the dilemma created by attractive job offers. Each nurse who is offered a management position needs to carefully assess her/his personal attributes as well as various factors about the position to determine the appropriateness of taking the position at the particular time. While few nurses manage the transition to management with ease, a poor decision can result in more than healthy growing pains. The deep trauma that may be inflicted by a painful experience in management may cause not only managerial burnout but even prompts some nurses to leave nursing. Premature timing in accepting a management position may not be in your best interest. On the other hand, a management position may offer you the challenge you have been waiting for and an opportunity to expand into a rewarding new nursing career.

When the operating room has a multicultural team.

Working with a culturally diverse team can be enlightening but challenging. Healthy interpersonal relationships are essential in a culturally diverse OR team. Communication, understanding, and tolerance are crucial for all members of the team.

Patients' use of denial: coping with the unacceptable.

Nurses working with terminally ill or bereaved clients and their families need to understand the defence mechanism of denial and how it helps people to cope with unacceptable physical and psychological threats.

Adaptation, Psychological↗

When your client in the surgical suite is Mexican American.

Although many Mexican Americans have assimilated into American culture, others have retained their cultural health beliefs about illness and medical treatment. Incorporating family members into the plan of care will greatly enhance compliance and health behaviors. The potential good of folk medicine should not be discounted; try to incorporate it into the existing plan of care.
