An evaluation of the leading patent equivalents services.

Patent equivalent services are useful tools for identifying patent families. A patent family consists of a group of patents in various countries which cover the same invention. The patent equivalents services provided by the three leading suppliers--Chemical Abstracts Service, Derwent Publications Ltd., and INPADOC--have been tested and evaluated for coverage, recall, and accuracy. Results are reported for a test sample consisting of 75 pharmaceutical patent families.

The evidence that salt is an important aetiological agent, if not the cause, of hypertension.

1. Salt intake and the incidence of hypertension correlate between populations. 2. Salt intake within a population may correlate with the incidence of hypertension. 3. Disorders that lead to retention of salt cause hypertension. 4. Modest salt restriction reduces blood pressure in many patients. 5. Reducing salt balance and preventing the compensatory rise in angiotensin II controls blood pressure in most patients. 6. Salt is the probable cause of the epidemic of hypertension in the Western world; this could be prevented by salt restriction.

Primary osteosarcoma of the kidney.

Osteosarcoma arising in the kidney is a bona fide entity. A case is reported and described in clinical and pathological detail. Characteristic changes include a palpable stony hard renal mass associated with radiographic demonstration of sunburst calcification in the kidney. The case presented is unique in that virtually the entire specimen was composed of bone.

Cold Shock Syndrome in Anacystis nidulans.

The phenomenon of cold shock in Anacystis nidulans has been explored further in terms of loss of viability and immediate and subsequent metabolic effects. Cold shock was observed also in two closely related strains in which unsaturated fatty acid contents are also known to be low and temperature-dependent. Loss of viability was maximum for cells grown at temperatures above 40 C (<10(-4) survivors after 5 min at 0 C) but became negligibly small for cells grown below 34 C. Development of the cold-sensitive condition after transfer 25 --> 39 C was slow and comparable to rate of growth; development of the insensitive condition after transfer 39 --> 25 C was rapid, implying rapid in situ alteration. An immediate metabolic effect, observed as a decrease in rate of photosynthetic O(2) evolution measured at growth temperature, was less severe than loss of viability. Continued light incubation under growth conditions led to slow decay in rate of O(2) evolution accompanied by loss of membrane chlorophyll. The multiple effects which comprise the cold shock syndrome appear to be membrane-related phenomena and thereby provide an experimental probe of normal membrane function.

Recent life events and acute schizophrenic psychosis: a controlled study.

In this case control study, first admission schizophrenic patients were found to report more recent life events overall and more events categorized as undesirable, familial, relocation, and legal than controls. Interpretation of the observations should be ventured cautiously given the small difference between schizophrenics and controls, the small number of subjects, the retrospective strategy, and the failure of events "independent of one's control" or events characterized as "threatening" to confirm the positive relationship of recent life events to the occurrence of illness. The present work is part of considerable recent research documenting a relationship between the amount and/or significance of recent life events and the occurrence of psychological symptomatology and major psychiatric syndromes. The overall difference between schizophrenics and normals in reporting events appears to be smaller in magnitude than the difference found between depressives and normals. Further, the significance of events for schizophrenics and for depressives is different. The number, type, severity, and pattern of recent life events reported by schizophrenics suggest a precipitating role of events rather than a formative one. These results are consistent with one other controlled study on schizophrenia and recent life experience.

Photosynthetic Unit Size during the Synchronous Life Cycle of Scenedesmus.

Apparent size of the photosynthetic unit (chlorophyll/O(2) per flash) was estimated by O(2) yield of repetitive short flashes on cell samples taken at various times from a synchronized culture (14-hour light, 10-hour dark) of Scenedesmus obliquus. Unit size was essentially invariant (< 10% variation) with a mean value of 1750 chlorophyll/O(2) per flash. In contrast, the light-saturated photosynthetic rate per unit chlorophyll, or turnover rate of the photosynthetic unit, varied with the life cycle, rising 40% in the first three hours of the light period and decaying slowly thereafter. The results are taken as evidence that the metabolic machinery is subject to far greater control and adjustment than is the photochemical machinery.

Isolation and initial characterization of a uracil auxotroph of the blue-green alga Anacystis nidulans.

A uracil-requiring auxotroph of Anacystis nidulans was isolated after treatment with N-methyl-N'-nitrosoguanidine. Neither precursors in the de novo pyrimidine pathway nor compounds of "salvage" or degradative pathways could replace the uracil requirement. The reversion frequency for mutation to a nonuracil requirement for growth was 2.0 times 10(-8). The calculated average rate of uracil utilization was 1.1 times 10(-17) mol of uracil per unit cell mass/h. The amount of uracil required for the synthesis of a unit cell mass was 3.8 times 10(-17) mol of uracil.

Computer-retrievable surgical pathology files. A low-cost, shareable system.

Reading descriptions of computer-retrievable surgical pathology files, the tissue pathologist might like to institute a similar system, but faces two problems. He finds little cost information and, without either the time or the skill for computer programming, he is unable to proceed with system development. We have a system that was developed to maximize cost efficiency. All of the programs are written in FORTRAN so that the system will run on almost any time-sharing computer. There is a need for computer-retrievable systems in pathology, and after careful consideration of affordability and shareability, computerization is workable.

Photosynthetic Production of Hydrogen Peroxide by Anacystis nidulans.

A sensitive assay based upon fluorescence of scopoletin allowed continuous recording of H(2)O(2) production in illuminated intact cells of Anacytis nidulans. Onset of illumination was followed by a 5 to 10 second lag, a burst of very rapid production continuing for up to 5 minutes, and finally a slow and continuing steady rate of H(2)O(2) production. Size of the H(2)O(2) burst was decreased by 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1, 1-dimethylurea, by low O(2), and by certain Calvin cycle intermediates; it was increased by high light intensity, CO(2) depletion, Calvin cycle inhibitors (as iodoacetamide), cold shock, carbonyl cyanide m-chlorophenylhydrazone, and certain organic acids as glycolate). The H(2)O(2) burst was explained by the following hypothesis: a low potential reductant is produced more rapidly than it can be used in the normal pathway to CO(2) reduction and, instead, reacts with oxygen. H(2)O(2) production is regarded as a metabolic defect observable in Anacystis most dramatically during the transition from a very low rate of oxidative dark metabolism to a high rate of photosynthetic metabolism.

Photosynthetic properties of permaplasts of anacystis.

A treatment procedure using lysozyme and ethylenediaminetetracetic acid gave intact but permeable cells (permeaplasts) of Anacystis nidulans. Rates of electron transport from water to carbon dioxide, ferricyanide, 2,6-dichlorophenol indophenol, benzoquinone, and methyl viologen, and from reduced indophenol to methyl viologen were measured as a function of treatment time. Rates of oxygen evolution in complete photosynthesis and electron flow from water to methyl viologen showed rapid and parallel decline with treatment time. Electron flow from water to ferricyanide and from reduced indophenol to methyl viologen increased during the first half hour of treatment (phase 1) to 60 to 80% of the original photosynthetic rate. Longer treatment (phase 2) resulted in decreased rate of ferricyanide reduction but not in rate of methyl viologen reduction from indophenol. Electron flow from water to quinone was two to three times higher than for complete photosynthesis in intact cells. It remained high during phase 1 and declined during phase 2. Phase 1 permeaplasts apparently retain high activity for photosystems 1 and 2 photoreactions.
