A statistical assessment of changes in precipitation chemistry at CAPMoN sites, Canada. Canadian Air and Precipitation Monitoring Network.

The objective of this study is to decide if chemical concentrations measured during 1988-1997 in precipitation by the Canadian Air and Precipitation Monitoring Network (CAPMoN) indicate changes in the annual patterns. The inference is based on SO4, NO3, Cl, NH4, Na, Ca and K concentrations monitored daily with the rain water acidity pH. By pattern is understood the probability distribution of the annual sample at a particular location. Most of the annual data can be well described by means of a linear regression model with second order polynomial trend and autocorrelated noise. Statistical analysis based on the model shows luck of systematic significant year to year increases or declines of the concentrations.

Stochastic differential equations, their interpretation and application.

The work is recommended to readers with some, maybe heuristic, imagine about stochastic processes that want to meet the notion stochastic differential equation and its interpretation. The notions like Brownian motion and stochastic integral with interpretations in concrete situations in areas of biology and medicine are discussed. The questions are related to mathematical modelling and they may be interpreted in connection with stochastic signal filtering and optimal queuing theory.

Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process and its application.

The paper deals with the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process (O-U), its approximation by discrete random processes designed for modelling of the O-U process and some methods of statistical evaluation. The known elementary properties of the O-U process and its discretization are summarized. As to the statistical methods, the maximum-likelihood estimates of parameters of the O-U process and some methods for hypothesis testing are demonstrated on results obtained by simulation of the O-U process on the computer.

Values of selected immunological parameters before and after speleotherapy.

Changes of the selected immunological parameters before and after the speleotherapy are studied. It seems, that CIK and Complement parameters can be effected during the treatment in caves while Ig and LSZ parameters did not show any systematic changes. Details are available in the paper.

Pollenosis.

A pollen prick test consisting of 43 sorts of pollens was applied to a sample of 154 pollenotics with unambigious clinical pollenosis symptoms. The results of the test are studied by means of some statistical methods. The obtained conclusions are used for a valorization of the hyposensibilisation allergen Desalerga A which is produced by the firm USOL.

The age of pollenotics.

This paper analyses the age structure of the pollenotics yearly examinated at the Allergology and Clinical Immunology Department of the Faculty Hospital at Olomouc. On the base of the obtained statistics we can say that the men's age constitution differs from the women's one. This difference may be a specific feature of the pollenosis as well as a consequence of the age structure of the population and other influences.

Familial anamnesis of pollenotics in the clinical practice.

The influence of familial history on some symptoms accompanying the pollenosis are studied. Conjunctivitis, asthma, rash and the number of positive responses in the skin prick test belong to this symptoms. The study was based on data from clinical notes from 152 pollenotics hospitalized + at the Allergology and Clinical Immunology department of the Faculty Hospital in Olomouc. Although the positive familial history was noted in about 50% of cases, none influence of the positive familial anamnesis on the observed symptoms was confirmed.

Latent allergy or a low exposition?

The results of a skin-prick test and statements about the season of allergic health problems were sampled from a group of 154 patients suffering from pollenosis. Then a pollen calendar was chosen on the base of literature and the statements of patients were compared with the test results and the pollen calendar. In many cases the patient had a positive test response although he stated his season of allergic troubles in a time interval which was disjoint with the blossom season of the plant the pollen of which effected in the test as the allergen. We ask, whether this responses classify as an appearance of a latent allergy or as a "normal" allergy which did not appear in consequence of the patient's low pollen exposition. On the base of our empirical material we prefer more the first alternative and assume that the "problematic" positive test responses were evoked by virtue of the patient's allergic dispositions and by his strong contact with allergens (pollens) which are correlated with the "problematic" ones.
