Twenty-eight months following free osseous autograft therapy, a block section was taken for histologic examination. (2) Microscopically, the periodontal structures were reconstructed with new alveolar bone, periodontal ligament, and cementum. (3) A 'separation artifact' was present between new and old cementum. This defect is probably an artifact of histologic processing.

The electrophysiological findings show a time and pressure related decrease in function of the CM and the N1 potentials. Sudden changes were correlated with tympanic membrane perforations. Some of the decreased function is accounted for by middle ear effusion and hemorrhages, reducing mechanically the transmission of sound energy through the middle ear. This was evidenced by an improvement of function when the fluids were removed. Remaining decreases in function were interpreted as a result of influences on the inner ear function or of undisclosed middle ear changes. No differences were noted in cochlear function between animals subjected to sustained or intermittent middle ear pressures. Neither were any morphological differences noted between these two groups in the middle or inner ear. The morphological middle ear findings correlated well with previous clinically and experimentally induced changes with increased/decreased middle ear pressure. The cochlear findings include the interesting observation of an intact round window membrane, a clear endolymph, and a normal Organ of Corti in all cases. Positive findings were a high frequency of hemorrhage, most commonly demonstrated in the scala tympani of the basal turn close to the round window. The origin of the hemorrhages could not be demonstrated with the present investigation. The hemorrhages often appeared to be related to the cochlear aqueduct. The occurrence of hemorrhage was clearly related to increased negative pressure, and the non-existence of hemorrhage was always related to either tympanic membrane perforations or low applied pressure. Further frequent findings were distention, collapse, and rupture of the inner ear membranes which must be interpreted with great circumspection due to the method used. Likewise, some of the pathological cochlear findings may be due to pathological conditions which are not necessarily related to induced middle ear pressure.

A controlled, double-blind comparison of naphalzoline hydrochloride 0.05%, antazoline phosphate 0.5%, a combination of both components and a placebo was performed on 51 ragweed sensitive patients presenting allergic conjunctivitis. Evaluation of response at various times after instillation of medication for lacrimation, conjunctival inflammation, pruritus, photophobia and pain showed naphazoline hydrochloride, antazoline phosphate and the combination product superior to placebo. The combination product was statistically significantly superior for conjunctival inflammation and photophobia. The need for post-challenge treatment with epinephrine hydrochloride was significantly less in those eyes treated with the combination product. demonstrating prophylactic efficacy.

A group of 37 patients with 39 renal transplants were studied from January 1971 to June 1974, in which 32 were considered at high risk by well defined cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, cerebral vascular, or pulmonary disease or age categories. Three of the 37 patients have died, and two patients in the high risk group, 92 per cent. Eighty-eight per cent of the entire group have functioning kidneys at present, and 93 per cent of those in the high risk group have functioning kidneys. Evaluation of pretransplant mixed lymphocyte cultures, HL-A antigen, and immune responder status; close follow-up observation of lymphocyte culture and humoral responses by in vitro testing; and the use of antilymphoblast globulin are considered to be the reasons for the improved results.
Adult rats received, intraperitoneally, 20 mg/100 g body weight of cyclophosphamide and were killed 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 14, 21, and 28 days thereafter. Lung samples were studied by light and electron microscopy. Light microscopy revealed septal and intraalveolar hemorrhages at 2 days and hyaline membranes at 4 days. At 1 to 2 weeks the alveoli were reepithelialized; beyond these intervals there was septal thickening with increased septal cells and interstitial substance. Electron microscopy showed capillary endothelial blebs, membranous pneumocyte injury and sloughing, and severe septal edema at 1 to 2 days. At 4 days some granular pneumocytes appeared altered. At 1 week the alveoli were reepithelialized by prominent granular pneumocytes. Beyond these intervals there was septal thickening with abundant septal cells, debris, collagen, elastin and microfibrils. Some septal elements showed features consistent with "contractile interstitial cells." There was also alveolar collapse indicated by "trapped" granular pneumocytes surrounded by septal cells and fibers. Occasional granular pneumocytes showed large intracytoplasmic cavities. Cyclophosphamide can induce severe injury involving all alveolar components. The partly denuded alveoli are reepithelialized by proliferating granular pneumocytes, thus confirming their importance in alveolar repair. The subsequent development of sclerosing alveolitis suggests that cyclophosphamide may offer a useful experimental model for the study of alveolar injury and repair. The role of the septal "contractile interstitial cells" in the development of septal fibrosis and the possibility that these lesions are reversible remain to be clarified.
Development of computer-assisted patient monitoring began at Westminster Hospital in early 1971. The system handles fluid balance measurements from data input to the system by keyboards, and automatically monitors cardiovascular measurements made by standard bedside monitors. Various graphical outputs are available on visual displays at the bedside to assist in the care of the patients, and as hard copy to replace the "traditional" nurses charts. The system was designed to assist the nurses in their daily tasks, and much of its initial success is believed to be due to the "user oriented" design philosophy.
Samples from medullary, intraductal, tubular and adenocystic breast carcinomas were studied ultrastructurally, with emphasis on the patterns of myoepithelial differentiation and basal lamina deposition. Myoepithelial cells, while prominent in the intraductal and adenocystic carcinomas, were rarely found in the medullary neoplasms and appeared absent in the tubular neoplasms. Parallel to the above, basal laminae were most abundant and evenly deposited in the intraductal and adenocystic tumors, but were infrequent in the medullary tumors and seemingly absent in the tubular carcinomas. Well-defined myoepithelial cells and retention of the capability to synthesize basal lamina are evidence of differentiation in neoplastic cell populations. Thus, their presence in intraductal and adenocystic carcinomas (generally associated with a good prognosis) is not surprising. However, their scarcity or absence in the similarly favorable group of medullary and tubular carcinomas suggests that other factors may also influence the invasive and metastasizing ability of breast carcinomas.

Cell free peritoneal fluids from 23 normal women had antimicrobial activity which was directed against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and also against yeasts. The activity was bacteriostatic or bactericidal and seemed to be due to the presence of a variety of factors which varied in their heat stability and dependence on complement. Lysozyme was present in the fluids but was not responsible for all the antimicrobial activity.
