Relationship between fat-free weight and urinary 3-methythistidine excretion in man.

The relationship between body composition determined by densitometry and urinary 3-methylhistidine (3-Mehis) output was studied in 16 healthy men (range 23--52 yr) who consumed a self-selected meat-free diet for 3 days and collected a 24-hr urine sample on the third day. Urinary 3-Mehis and creatinine outputs were 225 +/- 8 mumoles/day (mean +/- SEM) and 1.6 +/- 0.1 g/day, respectively. Mean fat-free weight (FFW) was 61.5 kg (range 46.9--76.4 kg). FFW correlated more closely with urinary 3-Mehis excretion (r = 0.89, p < 0.001) than with urinary creatinine excretion (r = 0.67, p < 0.1). These results suggest that endogenous urinary 3-Mehis may be related to muscle weight, which is a major component of FFW.

Effects of physical conditioning on cardiorespiratory function, body composition and serum lipids in relatively normal-weight and obese middle-aged women.

The primary purpose was to investigate the effects of a 12-week (4 day/week) physical conditioning program on cardiorespiratory function, body composition, and serum lipids (cholesterol and triglyceride concentration) in sedentary, middle-age women. A secondary purpose was to clarify the influence of excessive body fatness on the conditioning response. Forty-two 29 to 47-year-old premenopausal women volunteered; four were excluded and two dropped out, leaving 36 who completed the study, ie, 23 obese (O) (greater than 30 per cent fatness, mean = 38 per cent) and 13 lean to normal (N) (less than 30 per cent body fatness, mean = 25 per cent). The conditioning program included a 10-minute warm-up, 15 to 25 minutes of walking-jogging at an individually prescribed training heart rate corresponding to 75 per cent of maximal oxygen intake (VO2max) and a five-minute recovery period. Heart rate and systolic blood pressure at a given submaximal work load decreased in both N and O. VO2max increased (P less than 0.001 in both groups. The average increase in O was 15.0 per cent and 18.9 per cent and in N 12.6 per cent and 12.7 per cent when VO2max was expressed inlitre .min-1 and cm3.kg-1.min-1 respectively. HRmax remained unchanged in N, but decreased slightly (P less than 0.01) in O. Body weight remained essentially unchanged in N, yet decreased (P less than 0.001) in O. The sum of ten skinfolds decreased significantly (P less than 0.001) in both groups, but with a greater reduction in O. Fatness decreased slightly in N (P less than 0.05) and more in O (P less than 0.001) while fat-free weight remained unchanged in both groups. The conditioning program had no effect on serum lipids in either group. Thus, a physical conditioning program of moderate intensity affected obese and leaner women in a similar fashion.

[Upper gastrointestinal bleeding: comparison between the diagnostic conclusions of emergency fibroscopy and those of surgery (author's transl)].

Amongst 1035 patients who underwent oesophago-gastro-duodenal fibroscopy as an emergency for an upper gastrointestinal haemorrhage between January 1973 and May 1977, 100 required surgery. The operative findings were compared with those of endoscopy. In 92 cases, surgical exploration found the same lesions that the endoscopist had reported as being responsible for the haemorrhage. In 14 of these patients, surgical exploration provided complementary data to the endoscopic findings. In the other 8 patients, there was disagreement between the surgical and endoscopic findings. In particular, there were 5 diagnostic errors: 2 false negatives, 1 error of localisation of the lesion and 2 errors of interpretation. The earlier endoscopy is performed, the better are the results: discovery of the bleeding lesion and elimination of other non-haemorrhagic lesions.

Diet and starvation on the composition and calculated density of fat-free body mass.

The density of the fat-free body mass (FFM) was calculated from carcass composition and density of body components in 148 growing rats under different dietary conditions. These conditions were controlled feeding with 20% and 5% casein diets during 6 and 9 wk, followed by 5 days of starvation, and after starvation with 2 wk refeeding with 20 and 5% casein diets. The results showed that the density of FFM was fairly constant. The means and standard deviations for all conditions were 1.0965 +/- 0.0057 and 1.0956 +/- 0.0075, for the 20% and 5% casein groups, respectively, with a grand mean of 1.0960 +/- 0.0066. It was concluded that the assumption of a constant density of FFM holds very well for many dietary and experimental conditions.

Relationship of blood and saliva lactate and pyruvate concentrations.

Lactate and pyruvate concentrations of blood and saliva were investigated in nine healthy young men before and after maximal exercise. Lactate and pyruvate concentrations in saliva and blood were found to be unrealted. Interpretation favored salivary gland anaerobic metabolism as the origin of salivary lactate, but the large difference of 80 mg per 100 ml between blood and saliva found after 12 min of recovery may represent a threshold value and leaves unanswered the question on the origin of lactate in saliva. Multiple sampling following the recovery period for a longer time may change the present interpretation.
