We report a case of polyorchidism that was suggested preoperatively by scrotal sonography. A review of the literature on this rare anomaly discloses a previously underemphasized association with malignancy.

A statement of philosophy of management is a powerful declaration and one that must be continually reviewed. If it is to be accepted and recognized, the statement must reflect the true beliefs of management. The actions taken by management must also mirror those beliefs. We say "we believe"; the staff say "show us." Once your philosophy of management has been set down in writing and clearly defined, there is a grave responsibility to always act in accordance with the beliefs you have formally and openly acknowledged.
This paper proposes and carries out a two-stage analysis of the determinants of desired family size, using data gathered from a sample of women in the city of Ilorin, Nigeria. The analysis first focuses on differences between women who report numerical family size desires and those who report nonnumerical desires. Findings suggest that there are important differences between these two groups, but there is little variation in the actual number reported by those expressing numerical desires. Implications of these findings for survey design are discussed. In particular, the practice of forcing numerical responses by instructing interviewers to probe when women report nonnumerical desires is questioned.

We have prepared a computer program that predicts complete and partial peptide maps from amino acid sequences. The program fragments amino acid sequences at designated cleavage sites and calculates the molecular weight and relative labeling of each peptide. These data are graphed as log molecular weight of the original protein (X-axis) vs. log molecular weight of the component peptides (Y-axis). The program is interactive, permitting adjustment of a number of graphic parameters and alteration of the position of proteins in the first dimension to accommodate aberrations in protein mobility. The program has been used to predict the V8 protease peptide maps of the 13 open reading frames (ORFs) identified in the human and the mouse mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequences. The results were compared to the V8 protease peptide maps obtained for mouse and human mitochondrially synthesized proteins by two-dimensional proteolytic digest gels. A high correlation was observed between the predicted and observed peptide maps. These results suggest the assignment of several proteins to mtDNA genes.

Recent evidence indicates that laminin may be involved in the phenotypic behavior and metastasis of certain tumor cells. We examined the effect of laminin on monocyte-macrophage killing of two human tumor lines, Malme-3M melanoma and CAK-I renal carcinoma. Laminin enhanced both monocyte- and macrophage-mediated tumoricidal activity against human melanoma cells but did not promote monocyte and macrophage killing of CAK-I renal carcinoma cells. Laminin promoted substratum adherence of melanoma cells in a concentration-dependent manner but had no effect on adhesion of the renal carcinoma cells. The monocyte-macrophage cytotoxicity promoted by laminin paralleled its effects on cell substratum adhesion. In addition to an effect on adhesion, laminin also promoted migration of the melanoma cells but not of the renal carcinoma cells. Laminin did not promote the adhesion of monocytes or macrophages. Laminin may promote monocyte-macrophage tumor cytotoxicity by increasing the interaction of tumor and effector cells through its effect on target or tumor cells.

Mitochondrially synthesized polypeptides of human, monkey, and mouse cells were compared using SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). A single molecular weight variant, the major interspecific variant (MIV), was identified in human cells as compared to monkey and mouse. The peptide maps of MIV were compared between the three species using a two-dimensional proteolytic digest (2D-PD) gel system. A number of conserved peptides were found, indicating that the MIVs have a common function. Other MIV peptides were species specific. These results confirm the conserved nature of mitochondrial polypeptides and demonstrate the utility of 2D-PD gels in testing for protein alleles and detecting subtle protein variants.
Involvement of the posterior segment of the eye in Goldenhar-Gorlin syndrome is more common than is generally appreciated. We examined seven patients with this syndrome. Abnormalities included diminished visual acuity, tilted optic disc, optic nerve hypoplasia, tortuous retinal vessels, macular hypoplasia and heterotopia, microphthalmia and anophthalmia. In one case, pathologic study showed agenesis of the optic nerve. It is proposed that retinal, optic nerve and craniofacial abnormalities in this condition may reflect an asynchrony in the migration of the neural crest cells in the early stages of embryonal development.

13 cases of Goldenhar-Gorlin syndrome are presented in which numerous central nervous system anomalies have been found. These include occipital encephalocele, hydrocephalus, aqueductal stenosis, agenesis of corpus callosum, multiple congenital lipomas and many others. Pertinent literature has been reviewed. It is concluded that any part of the central nervous system can be involved in this condition and that careful evaluation is indicated in order to rule out a treatable intracranial anomaly.
