[Multiple eccrine hydrocystomas of the eyelids in the framework of Schöpf syndrome. A case report].

Schöpf-Schultz-Passarge syndrome is a rare ectodermal dysplasia described by Schöpf in 1971. The disease is characterized by hypodontia, hypotrichosis, palmoplantar keratoderma, hypoplastic nails and eyelid hydrocystomas. We report the case of a 71-year-old man, the first French description of this syndrome, who remarkably presented all the signs. The patient also had skin tumors, multiple eccrime hidrocystomas and aspectific macular degeneration. A review of the literature is discussed.

Interlaboratory study for the assessment of potential irritative properties of hygiene products on the hamster cheek pouch.

An interlaboratory study was carried out to determine the feasibility and reliability of a method using the hamster cheek pouch as a model for assessing the potential irritative properties of substances intended to be applied to the lips or other mucous membranes. The test substances were applied once daily to both pouches for 14 consecutive days. Local and general tolerances were appraised throughout the study. At the end of the study, histologic examination of the pouches and the main organs was performed. Results of the feasibility study, conducted on various types of commercial products, indicated that this model is suitable for preparations of various consistence and composition. Results of the reliability study, carried out on gel-type preparations containing various concentrations of a known irritant, sodium lauryl sulfate, indicated that the method elicits a dose-dependent reaction for this compound. This hamster cheek pouch method was reproducible for the various parameters under consideration: local tolerance, general tolerance, histologic examination. For all products, results were in good agreement among the various laboratories participating in the study. The French regulatory authorities of the Fraud Repression Department have accepted it as an official method for the evaluation of the potential irritative properties of cosmetics and hygiene products intended to be applied to the lips or other mucous membranes.

Does the nucleus raphes participate in the regulation of resting and stress-induced hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical activity in the pigeon?

Extensive multiple electrolytic lesions were placed into the nucleus raphes of the brain stem in the pigeon. Diurnal pituitary-adrenocortical rhythmicity appeared not to be altered and basal plasma corticosterone level remained quite normal in raphe lesioned birds. Electrical stimulations through permanently implanted electrode were delivered in various central nervous structures in unanaesthetized, freely moving pigeons. Stimulations of nucleus raphes and of various parts of formatio reticularis led to a significant rise in plasma corticosterone within 16 to 19 min after the beginning of the stimulating session. Then, plasma B came again to initial level within 15 minutes. Stimulations of the corticotropic area of the hypothalamus (n. posterior medialis hypothalami) and of archistriatum dorsalis induced an early plasma corticosterone increase occurring immediately after the stimulating burst (10 min). Stimulating the n. septum medialis also had an immediate, but reverse (decrease) effect on plasma corticosterone level. Stress-induced pituitary-adrenal cortical activation exhibited a temporal pattern quite similar to that observed after brain stem (n. raphes or formatio reticularis) stimulation. It is suggested that these various limbic and brain stem areas might be involved in some "limbic system-midbrain circuit" with two components : The forebrain component might be involved in the regulation and diurnal modulation of basal hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical function, the brain-stem component interferring with stress-induced responses.

Sampling survey on brucellosis among farmers and their families in Ille-et-Vilaine (Brittany).

A three-stage sampling survey among farmers and their families living on farms in the department of Ille-et-Vilaine gave the following results: Among 490 persons examined 313 (64 per cent) showed a positive skin test and 105 (21 per cent) a positive serological reaction; 88 of the 105 patients ignored their health status, although 45 of these presented clinical symptoms (nine per cent). This survey is continuing in order to study the non-respondents and to better analyse the epidemiological situation at a farm level.

[Raphe nucleus and corticorophic activity in pigeons].

Multiple electrolytic lesions were placed in the raphe area of pigeons. Basal plasma corticosterone level (B) was found not to be altered. Stress-induced adrenocortical activation was markedly reduced in raphe lesioned pigeons as compared to controls. Electrical stimulation of the nucleus raphes in permanently implanted, unrestrained and unanesthetized birds induced a significant rise in B. However the magnitude of the response to raphe stimulating was lower (1/2 approximately) and especially later than after hypothalamic stimulation since it paralleled exactly the pattern of stress induced activation.

[Curable ECHO 5 virus encephalitis. Clinical, electroencephalographic, virologic and ultrastructural study].

A 10 1/2 years old boy fell brutally ill with a fit followed by confusion, and then by deep coma, with 40 degrees C fever and morbilliform rash. Consciousnesse came back within ten days, with transient Parkinson-like tremor. Myoclonus persisted for about six months. Complete recovery was followed up for six years. A diagnosis of encephalitis was considered on early EEG evidence (stereotyped repetitive sharp wave bursts) and was confirmed by isolation of ECHO 5 virus from brain specimen, and ultrastructural observation of characteristic cytopathic effect (disappearance of organelles, proliferation of smooth membranes) and of probable viral particules in astrocytes, without any inflammatory process.
