[Pharynx-esophagus replacement by synthetic skin].
Report on the temporary substitution of pharynx and upper oesophagus with synthetic skin substitute in case of incurable obdurating neck carcinoma.
[Sudden deafness and its therapy. Clinical study of 548 cases].
Analysis of 548 cases of sudden deafness shows impressively the importance of an infusion therapy with drugs improving the circulation which should be started as soon as possible. The greatest success could be made in the deep frequencies, whereas in the high frequencies the results were lower by nearly 8 decibels. Patients with sudden deafness on both sides or recurrent sudden deafness showed significantly less improvement of hearing than patients with first-time sudden deafness on one side. Remarkable is the continuous growth of sudden deafness in the low frequencies only, a phenomenon which was rarely seen one generation ago. Can this be interpreted as a change in the pattern of sudden deafness?
[Intracranial and cervical elimination of carotid circulation as a prerequisite for operability of extensive neck tumors].
Large malignant tumours of the neck with an infiltration of the joint or internal carotid walls are mostly regarded as inoperable, if not as incurable. The cooperation between a neurosurgeon and an ENT surgeon opens the possibility, by elimination of the carotid flow, to effect a radical removal even of exceptionally extended tumours, thus offering a chance of survival for otherwise incurable patients.
[Extreme case of open laryngeal trauma (author's transl)].
Description of a very rare case of open laryngeal trauma, caused by a high-pressure 'cutting' waterjet. Immediate wound-toilet, healing without any complication within few days.
[Frequency of tonsillectomy in bronchial cancer patients (author's transl)].
Among 1415 bronchial cancer patients were 84 (5.94%) tonsillectomized observed. In an equal number of controls, selected according to the strictest criteria, there were 265 (18.7%) tonsillectomized. The latter figure corresponds to the lower limit for the frequency of tonsillectomies in the Federal Republic of Germany in the second half of the seventies. Thus these results show that bronchial cancer patients were subjected to tonsillectomy 3 times less than individuals not suffering from bronchial cancer. These results are in perfect agreement with previously obtained findings on the incidence of tonsillectomy in ENT tumors as well as in leukemia in children and adults.
[Tonsillectomy and leukemia in adults (author's transl)].
Among 752 leukemic adult patients 99 were tonsillectomized and among 752 strictly selected healthy persons ("individual matched pairs") 182. This difference is significant and shows the same results as earlier examinations in leukemic children by Matzker and Klasen. Authors suggest further controls of these impressioning statisticts. New aspects of tonsillar pathophysiology and also indication for adenotonsillectomy are induced.
[An emergency tracheal cannula and alarm for the laryngectomee (author's transl)].
An emergency tracheal cannula and a sound and light alarm for the laryngectomised patient are described. Both instruments, which are inexpensive and simple, were developed at patient request.
[Juvenile tonsillectomy and leukemia].
Among 305 children with leukemia, between one and fourteen years old, authors found 8 and in a comparative group ("individual matched pairs") 40 children with removed tonsils. The difference (2.62% tonsillectomized children in the leukemia-group, 13.11% in the comparative group) is highly significant. The frequency of tonsillectomy in childhood in Germany corresponds to the percentage of 13.11%. It has to be discussed, if there exists a causality between the state of the tonsils and the frequency of leukemia in childhood. The authors suggest further investigations of this highly interesting subject.
