An outbreak of approximately 200 cases of acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis is described in Prekmurje, a northern province in Yugoslavia. The epidemic was caused by enterovirus type 70, serologically identical with the causative agents of similar outbreaks in London and Japan. The origin of the outbreak could not be elucidated but a link was seen between this case and a small outbreak in Veenendaal in the Netherlands.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects on symptoms, pulmonary function, sleep, and other clinical variables of treating kyphoscoliosis-associated chronic alveolar hypoventilation with nocturnal nasal ventilation. DESIGN: Sixteen patients with kyphoscoliosis were treated with nocturnal nasal ventilation delivered by volume-cycled (seven patients) and pressure-cycled (nine patients) ventilators. Dyspnea, morning headaches, fatigue, hypersomnolence, and perceived sleep quality were assessed. RESULTS: All pretreatment symptoms improved significantly with nasal ventilation. Likewise, PaO2 (mm Hg), PaO2/FlO2, PaCO2 (mm Hg), pH, and forced vital capacity (in milliliters and as a percentage of predicted normal) significantly improved with treatment. Maximum inspiratory pressures and maximum expiratory pressures also significantly increased. Tidal volumes increased significantly and breathing frequency decreased (not significant). Although perceived sleep quality improved, as well as sleep oxyhemoglobin saturation, there was no significant change in sleep architecture. Hospitalization days for respiratory difficulties also decreased from 10.9 +/- 13.3 days in the 6 mo before intermittent positive-pressure ventilation to 0 days during the first 6 mo of treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Although not apparently affecting sleep architecture, nocturnal nasal ventilation can significantly improve nocturnal and daytime blood gases, pulmonary function, and symptoms of hypoventilation for patients with severe kyphoscoliosis.
To evaluate the effects of aerobic physical conditioning on plasma lipoproteins, we studied 26 previously untrained, apparently healthy, non obese volunteers. All participants underwent a treadmill test performed according to the protocol of Bruce with the direct measurement of maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max). A program of aerobic exercise was prescribed for each volunteer at 70% of their corresponding VO2max. At baseline and at the end of weeks 4, 8 and 12 of the exercise program, cholesterol and triglycerides were measured by enzymatic analysis in total plasma and in the lipoprotein fractions separated by preparative ultracentrifugation and precipitation methods. At the end of week 12, the VO2max measurement was repeated. At the end of the protocol, mean VO2max increased from the value of 39.9 observed at baseline to 94.4 ml/kg/min (p less than 0.01). There were no variations in mean body weight, diet or smoking status of the participants during the exercise program. Cholesterol associated with High-density lipoproteins (C-HDL) increased from 42.5 to 46.1 mg/dl (p less than 0.05). This effect was first noticeable at week 8. We didn't observe significant changes in Total Cholesterol nor the Cholesterol fraction associated with Low-density lipoproteins (C-LDL). Total triglycerides decreased at weeks 4 and 8 but returned to near baseline values at week 12. The C-LDL/C-HDL ratio considered as an index of a high coronary risk decreased from 2.32 at baseline to 2.02 (p less than 0.05) at week 12. Thirteen of the twenty six initial volunteers completed the physical conditioning program as planned, the rest were eliminated at different stages of the protocol due to incomplete adherence to their exercise schedules.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

The authors report a case of complex angiodysplasia of the right lower limb, complicated by an ulcer of the ankle, and associated with a venous dysplasia, arteriovenous fistulae, and malformations in the distal arterial system. A deliberately partial embolization of the arteriovenous communications of the right foot helped to achieve scarring of the trophic disturbance.
The authors report on a case of a patient having several unexplained pulmonary embolisms. A phlebologic and phlebographic exam make it possible to diagnose an aneurysmal dilatation of the popliteal vein as the cause of the thrombo-embolic problems. Cure was obtained through the resection of this venous ectasia.
The rate of human papillomaviruses (HPV) 16 and 18 infections were measured in 109 women with histologically or cytologically determined lesions of the uterine cervix and in 42 healthy women. Cervical swabs were taken as the source of the target viral DNA. In situ hybridization with biotinylated probes was used. HPV-16 was the predominant type in patients and in healthy women. The percentage of positive cases was the highest in cervical cancer patients: 43.3% in squamous cell carcinoma and 33.3% in adenocarcinoma followed by cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), III, II (21.4%), CIN I (14.3%) and low grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (13.6%). HPV-18 type was detected in a lower percentage in the three groups of patients. In healthy women HPV-16 was determined in 12% and HPV-18 in 4.8%. We believe that the described noninvasive method of obtaining clinical material should be the method of choice for estimating papillomavirus infections in patients and in the general population. Our results are in agreement with suggestions that HPV genotype could be an important prognostic indicator in cervical carcinoma.
