The diagnostic role of the intraosseous phlebography in the affections of the hip in childhood.

The authors have applied intraosseous phlebography 38 times in 33 children, in order to assess the extent of damage to the femoral head circulation in fractures of the femoral neck and other disorders. Contrast medium was injected mostly into the epiphysis, but eventually into the metaphysis too. Results of these examinations have been important guidelines in the management of the disease, i.e. if the venous drainage of the contrast medium was delayed or absent, or if the contrast medium was congested in the head, the weightbearing had to be releaved until regenerative signs of the femoral head were seen.

Measurement of electrical resistance after nerve injuries of the hand.

The authors measured electrical resistance of skin to define the sensory loss. A significant increase of the skin resistance was observed in the zone of sensory loss, as compared with the skin surfaces of normal innervation. The sensory map, sweating map (ninhydrine test) and the skin resistance map were also compared by the authors. The main advantages of the electrical skin resistance test are that it is a quantitative one, and takes less time than the other methods.

[Ganglion in the ulnar nerve sulcus as a cause of ulnar nerve irritation].

A ganglion at the cubital tunnel is a rare cause of ulnar nerve compression. Wrong or late diagnosis may be common. In one of the two described cases the diagnosis was made promptly, so that the early operation was followed by full restitution. In the other patient, at first the site of compression was supposed to be at the wrist. Only at the second operation was the ganglion in the cubital tunnel detected and removed. The result was unsatisfactory because motor loss was permanent.

[Results, problems and ways of future progress in the Hungarian trauma surgery (author's transl)].

Author after having given account of the importance of traumatology is dealing with the present situation of trauma care in Budapest and in the country side. The need of increasing the number of beds for trauma care is pointed out. Establishing regional centers would mean the up to date advancement in the management of injured. Out-patient treatment, instrumentation and postgraduated teaching is dealt with. Finally special profiles of trauma surgery are detailed the furthering of which seems especially important: intensive care, neurotraumatology, hand injuries and burns. As a final question the septic complications are mentioned meaning a problem not only for the traumatologist.

[Corrective osteotomy in malalignment of healed fractures of the metacarpal and phalangeal bones].

As a result of improper immobilization in extension following phalangeal and metacarpal fractures, rotation and deviation deformities can occur. The functional disturbance and aesthetic deformities can be corrected with an osteotomy through the proximal phalanx of the metacarpal. The technique and results of this correction osteotomy are described. Prevention of these malunions by proper positioning at the time of primary treatment is emphasized.

[Ganglion in the ulnar nerve groove (author's transl)].

Two cases of a rare localisation of ganglion is reported in this paper. A ganglion in the ulnar nerve presented by complete loss in ulnar nerve function. Attention is drawn to the importance of early diagnosis, and to the fact, that in cases of ulnar nerve lesions of unknown origin tumors in the ulnar groove must be considered.

[Diagnosis and treatment of postoperative infections following hip injuries].

The authors studied the diagnosis and treatment of posttraumatic infections of the hip joint, based on their own material. In case of latent infection the increased sedimentation rate and taking of comparative X-ray films are held important, that shows a narrowing and disappearance of the sclerosed edge of the acetabulum. Following dislocation of the hip joint ankylosis may be attained, but after fractures of the proximal and of the femur the infection cannot be cured, unless the nail and the head of the femur are removed.

[Treatment of contracture of the finger joints by capsulectomy and spring-splints].

The treatment performed in 84 cases of contracted PIP articulations is reported, -in 50 cases the treatment has been carried out with spring-actuated splint and in 34 cases with capsulectomy. It has been found by the authors that the results of the physico-therapeutic treatment used so-far may be still more improved, -satisfactory result has been obtained in more than the half of the author's cases. The advantages of the use of the spring-acutatd splint as against Quengel's method are emphasized. Capsulectomy performed in very serious cases resulted in improvement of the articulation motion in 50% of the cases.
